The Mersey Tunnel

I’m sure we have all witnessed it at least once in our lifetimes.

My mother used to say it looks like the entrance to the Mersey Tunnel.

Do you find if distracting or would you happily carry on your business when flashed by a lady?

If I was walking around with my flys open I would want someone to point it out to me.

ive often wondered why it meanders, yud think it would have saved a few quid if the tunnel was straighter.

i did send this query into radio 4s Any Questions many moons ago , and jack de manio told me to eff off, which i thought was a bit gratuitous, down came his poster off my bedroom wall pretty sharpish.

T'internet says

a) As the navvies drunk more Guiness they thought it looked straight

b) At the time it was built it was incorrectly thought that a straight tunnel would cause problems with wind blowing through it.

c) It apparently follows some of the road layout above (or at least that what I was told as a kid)

b. sounds a reasonable shout.

the lower part of the tunnel [ under the current roadway ] was intended to be a railway [ tram ? ] line but the idea was dropped due to cost.

Re Tunnels

I was told that the reason for the kinks was that the horses would not bolt when they saw the light at the far end if it were straight

The two London tunnels certainly bear that idea out

There are two Mersey road tunnels, Queensway and Kingsway. The latter has ventilation shafts on each side that look like giant concrete space invader characters, or a bit like 1960's Soviet architecture.

If a horse can see the other end of a tunnel, it bolts for it, hence why they used to put bends in them.

Mmmm, my leg is not for pulling, not convinced, the queensway tunnel was constructed in 1925-34 for motor transport, I doubt the potential crankiness of horses played any part in its eventual design and alignment.
