Canon fodder...
Discussion
Okay, so I pondered my options, looked at the 300d versus the 350d, weighed up the various kit deals, priced up the Canon, 18-55 and 55-200, hassled Jessops for their BAFO, surfed Ebay endlessly for Canon bargains ...and bought a D70 and 18-70 from Dixons :D
So, no Dark Sdie for me!
NOW what happens? I could read the manual, of course, but that's too obvious. I've worked out which bit to look through, and found the on/off switch...

Ah, but you've got to charge the battery first... So get
the manual. t0ny99 said:

That's funny!
But trust me, you DO need to read the manual - ideally from cover to cover - because any DSLR is a complicated beast and there's loads of stuff you simply will not find, still less understand, just by poking buttons. Leaving it on Auto and pressing the button means you'll only be using 10% of the capability of your new toy.
I was thinking of either the 350d or the D50. After reading a lot of reviews I thought I was sold on the 350d.
However after going into my local dixons to have a "touchy feel" I came away disapointed because my first choice just did not feel right. The d50 just fitted my hands (not large) that much better.
The advice here has been to pick the things up, this is something I would no re-iterate, it certainly makes a difference.
Cheers

Well, I was dead set on the 350d too, and the price difference was a big factor. But I managed to get the D70 and 18-70mm lens for £630, and as the Canon is £600 with the stock 18-55mm (average quality, by all accounts) at best, it became a no-brainer.
Paul,
If it helps, but you may find this of some help (I certainly did)
It compares the D50 to the D70s and the Rebel XT (basically the 350D). Good image analysis at the end of the page.

Good stuff, thanks!
You bought something, anything, from Dixons ?!!
Check it for damage, seriously. Its probably been dropped several times before you got it. Make sure you also look for fingerprints where they shouldn't be such as on the mirror, rear lens element as well as front, and I hope they haven't been poking around near the sensor too.

No Never!! I just use them as they are the nearest store that stock them, as I said only went in for a "feel"!
