I own a four year old VW, this means that every six weeks or so a new fault code arrives.

This week after a £400-odd ABS fault (ten days ago) I reckon i might need some sort of fault code reader due to another EML. I have an iPhone but not sure if it's better to buy a stand alone device.

Any recommendations (other than selling and never buying a VW ever again)?

The obd2 readers available on amazon are pretty good actually. I bought one for the wife’s bmw (pile of st) and it’s fairly comprehensive to as what it will do, scan/clear codes and live data from sensors etc etc

I have never had much success with the crappy obd2 phone apps.

Do you have any advice on ones to pick from? I have looked at the Amazon ones but have no idea which would be any better than useless.

Bluetooth ELM 237 bluetooth puck on ebay for $5 + Torque Pro app on Android or Apple for $6 and you have a scanner that can read live data and get regular updates.

And will give zero information other than basic engine data.

I have an elm327 wifi jobbie that my phone connects to.

However, maybe you also need VCDS for VW specific stuff
