Car import NOVA process question
Discussion
I'm importing a classic car from a dealer based in Dublin. I'm based in Northern Ireland, so there should be no duty to pay.
Nevertheless, I need to complete the NOVA import form on HMRC website, problem being that the seller's company VAT number is not being recognised. I've tried different formats but nothing woirks.
HMRC won't answer the phone and have no web advisors available.
Bit stuck here!

Is the number accepted here https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-vat-number ? or here https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/ for Ireland?
If it's not accepted in the relevant place, I suggest asking the seller why they don't appear to have a valid VAT number.
If it is accepted there then I can only really suggest printing out (a) the error on the NOVA service (b) the acceptance of the exact same VAT number on the official checking service and (c) the relevant details, and posting those to HMRC - at least that way you've notified them and have justified not doing so through their online service.

It doesn't appear to be accepted on either website. I'm really hoping he's made a typo.If it's not accepted in the relevant place, I suggest asking the seller why they don't appear to have a valid VAT number.

I got through to the relevant HMRC dept (PTU) and they were nonplussed. I mentioned the possibility of importing it as a personal sale, to circumvent the VAT no. issue, but they weren't too sure on that one.
Ah well. I suppose my best bet is to fill in the form and post it off. Let them decide if the VAT number is relevant or not, considering there's no duty to pay here in NI.
Thanks for the help.
Update: I did some googling on the format and realised he'd added an extra digit. Two hours of googling and phoning HMRC all for that!
