Hi All,

Was looking at going to view this tomorrow https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202204124574233?sort=price-asc&make=BMW&advertising-location=at_cars&include-delivery-option=on&radius=1500&postcode=ig38dn&price-from=500&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&year-from=2010&model=M3&price-to=20000&page=1&percentVehiclePriceDeposit=true

Ticks all my boxes however upon some digging the following has come to the surface:

- New log book 1 week before car went up for sale, no change of license plate
- £2k+ price drop in a week
- Seller is going abroad hence the quick sale
- Photos sent to me privately show the car being somewhat filthy and the interior has loads of crumbs etc,
- Guy works for BMW group and has got details wrong about the car such as interior colour etc
- 2 MOT fails during current ownership due to tyres worn down to ply

What are your opinions on the above? (I'm a touch weary to be honest) its a 2hr+ drive for me so don't want to waste a saturday.

Plenty of better looking examples under £20k with similar spec/mileage based on a quick look on AT.

Not a car you want to by in haste from someone who hasn't looked after it.

12 y.o. M3s are pretty much always going to have a bit of a colourful back-story...

What you've mentioned doesn't sound too bad to me and I see he lists various other work that's been done to the car and that he mentions FSH which I guess you've checked out...

I can't comment on whether it's good value as not up to speed with prices of these

Car says to me the owner has probably never lifted the bonnet. Says hes put 2 rear tyres on when from MOT history it was fronts replaced. To me it shows zero interest in the car and being accurate its history, fact you say he sent photos showing the interior in a state shows it hasnt been cared for. Looks like another chump trying to run an M3 on 116d money. Managed to wear down fronts to the ply within 5000 miles when previous MOT doesnt mention being close to legal limit.

Friend of mine had one of these, too easy to clock too.

Try searching for him online using his phone number, reg number, image search and anything else you have. I was about to travel to look at something similar, when I found him on a marque forum, asking for advise about what he could do about significant coolant loss. Also do a Vcheck. Another car I was about to look at was recorded as Cat N, which the private seller didn't mention in the ad.

Forget it.

Look for a cherished example.

The one in the advert looks like a sack of ste. The dodgy history and black on black look is bad enough but look at the lack of effort on the part of the seller. The crap photos just about day everything you need to know about this old dog.

OP, comment seems generally favorable hehe

So can we expect to see this in a forthcoming issue of 'Reader's Drives'?

I'd give it a miss.

Any M3 owner who took it for an MOT last year with a dangerous defect (tyre with a cord exposed) isn't likely to have looked after it too well!

Why does the rear look like it's collapsed a little, is that normal for this car?

Those black wheels look garbage, and I reckon that it is probably about 12 years since the exhaust tips were cleaned!

OP ask the seller if he wouldn't mind getting it cleaned & re sending some photos as you'll be able to assess the car better.

If he says no then you'll have your answer as to whether or not it's worth travelling 2 hours for, pretty much all M3's/AMG's/RS's etc will have some sort of past, failing only on tyres isn't a big red flag for me.
