Weird iPhone call problem
Discussion
For the last couple of months we've regularly been getting the same problem on both mine and my wife's iPhones when at home. On a regular phone call, we can hear the other party clearly but they pretty much can't hear us. It doesn't matter whether we're on WiFi calling (Virgin broadband) or 5G (Three). FaceTime and WhatsApp calls are fine and there's nothing wrong with our mics. If it wasn't happening on 5G I'd say it was a WiFi issue but given that it happens either way and it affects both phones (iPhone 12 & 11) I'm stumped. The only possible explanation I can think of is that something is interfering from our neighbours. It doesn't happen away from the house and it happens whether the other party is on a mobile or a landline. Our house is 50 years old so no Faraday Cage type issues.
Any ideas ?

Do you still get the problem on the call using apple earpods/airpods?
I had something similar...no-one could hear me on calls or goggle voice calls unless I plugged in the headphones or turned on the airpods, but it DID work for facetime (speaker phone) ok and they could hear me, albeit a little quieter.
After several frustrating visits to the apple store getting nowhere, it turns out that there are a couple of different mics and speakers on an iphone that interact with one another, and which ones are used is dependent on which app the call is being done through, or whether it's being done via the regular phone app. It eventually turned out that it was one of these mics/speakers getting gunked up over time with dirt/hair stuff/skin cells/etc....which they cleaned out using their tools and sticky stuff that looks suspiciously like blu tac.
Unfortunately the problem kept returning over time, requiring periodic repeat visits to the apple store to be cleaned out again.
If the problem vanishes when using earpods/airpods, there is your answer. If it doesn't vanish I have no idea and suggest visiting an apple store for diagnostics.
Edit - just re-read, and you said it doesn't happen away from the house. No idea in that case. Odd.
