those poor teachers

Who would want to be a teacher? Perhaps if they allowed them to use discipline to regain control of the classroom teachers wouldn't be leaving in their droves.
Exactly
With the current disclipine problems I wouldn't be a secondary school teacher.
They should get combat pay.

I suppose they do have a point in a way.
The number of teaching posts is determined by government policy. The number of places on teacher training courses are also indirectly determined by government policy. It is more efficient to only train the number you need.
true but then u prob could use that arguement about most jobs? dont forget private schools too + they can teach abroad

Agreed. I work in the legal department of the National Union of Teachers and some of the personal injury cases we take on are quite disturbing in terms of classroom behaviour. It's a real eye opener. Some teachers have had to cope with physical abuse such as chairs/desks being thrown at them, lighted paper and anything else which happens to be to hand, not to mention verbal abuse, deliberate damage to their property and vehicles, stalking and malicious text messages and phone calls.
It doesn't really compare to an average day at the office!
Teaching is a vocation, and should remain so. to offer jobs to all who take the course will bring in people who want to teach because they get long paid for hols and short working weeks.
have you ever noticed that primary school staff are predominently female.(I wonder why that is???)
BECAUSE IT FITS IN WITH KIDS HOLS. no childcare fees.
Sorry if this sounds harsh. It,s those who teach for convenience that annoy me. Those who teach as a vocation are usually damm good at it. and hence dont get assalted and abused. because they have the correct stratgies and personalities to handle difficult children.

I don't agree that it is the fault of the teachers when they are abused or assaulted. It is the fault of an education system which has abandoned effective discipline.
Teaching used to be a respected profession, now it seems to be coming the refuge of graduates with pass/3rd degrees who are struggling to find permanent employment elsewhere. This might explain the high drop out rate among new teachers. If you make entry into teaching a similar ordeal as other professions like law and medicine you will end up with motivated talented young people who will make excellent teachers..... of course that would require a payscale and benefits (such as the suggested scheme) to match the other professions and so it'll never happen
which is a shame as imho next to hospitals schools are THE most important public service. At the moment there are a large number of new teachers who don't know their subject and don't have the ability to teach what little they do know!
