Hello,

I am leaving my job shortly and was contacted by HR yesterday to arrange an exit interview.

Now, I've not had one of these before. How candid should I be (I have a lot to say, not much of it complimentary!). Should I worry about the results influencing a reference (not that I'm too worried about it). Will anything I say be applied should it be useful advice?

Cheers,
Phil.

Keep it factual with backup evidence if necessary. Try and keep the personalities out of it.

I've definitely got a lot that will fit in to that category - that I genuinely think will assist my colleagues.

Err... there may be one point where that would come in to it. I guess it was this that made me post the thread.

Thanks for the advice.

My wife does these all the time, typically it is to find out why you are leaving (for their attrition stats)what you think about the firm etc.

IIRC you can also opt out of an exit interview in most places.

HR will typically provide a reference stating that you were employed between a set of dates, only providing extra if asked (most people asking for references don't ask for info on cautions/warnings whichare current).

It can't hurt to tell the truth, but maybe you don't want to burn any bridges by saying something that you later wish you hadn't. In my wifes firm they periodically feed back to the departments but the feedback is anonymous (not too hard to guess who usually though). Personally I wouldn't say anything to HR which I wouldn't say to my manager.

Assuming you have already got a job sorted out then you should be honest with them. As long as it is obvious that you are telling the truth rather than having an axe to grind, it will increase their respect of you. Obviously if you left on bad terms you don't want to help them so just tell them how great the worst people are

Exactly - keep it based in facts rather than suposition or personal feelings. Sounds daft but HR are obliged to investigate and deal with any issues or problem you may or may not arise. Keep it amicable and reasonable. Not worth rubbing people up the wrong way sometimes - you never know if they pop-up again in your career....

I was going to say the same thing, dont burn your bridges just in case you ever end up working for the company or with the people again. I actually ended up working for the same company 3 times.

But saying that I have left some crispy bridges where I knew I never wanted to go back.

Definitely. They're not going to act on what you say and there's no benefit to you in mouthing off, however justified, so just keep quiet.

One of the things I was going to say is that we have a review in November. This is then not referenced again until the next November where your targets and level of attainment are assessed. This "doesn't affect your bonus" apparently [cough]bollox[/cough]... yet what they promise to do isn't even covered.

i.e. your performance is measured, theirs isn't.

Would this be something that you think'd be valid to bring up?

I think that it would be a valid point to bring up, but knowing the company that you work for nothing will be done about it anyway - so is it really worth it?

hmm, you're right. But the HR girl conducting the interview is pretty fit. Maybe I should just commend her on her butt.

oooo, I'm SO for it!

I'm thinking of the colleagues and friends I am leaving behind...

But you're right. I'm just going to say "it's been emotional".

Oh all the time.....

Anyway, I would just walk out of the door, dignity intact knowing that you are moving on to something better. They will not change their working practices so what is the point you wasting your breath....listen to Mr Rascal...he give good advice!
