Help! SUV hell

I'm sitting on a few options that give best bang for buck in >18k budget on a 2017/18 plate, below 50k.

CX-5
Sportage
Tuscon

CX-5 seems to attract to me more, it feels and looks like more a robust car.
Koreans both will have 3/4 years warranty left but cost in servicing with main dealers of course.
CX-5 seems to be more with less advanced ICE than Koreans.
Koreans have 4WD (better ride but more on life of tyres/things to go wrong)?
CX-5 less emissions ?

It's a constant circle of thoughts in my head lol

Diesel or Petrol? IIRC, the diesel on the Mazda (2.2d) can be problematic. The petrol options are fairly tepid too..

No need to service at the main dealer for the Kia/Tucson.
As long as genuine OEM Parts are used it can be done at any VAT registered garage and keep the warranty intact.

I'd consider a CRV in that bracket also, they are nice cars. More to tax and fuel than CX5.

We just went through the same and ended up with a CX5, Seems a great car, sport nav (which became sport nav+ models in 2018) have a pretty decent spec.
When they became plus you got radar cruise, Lane assist and a sun roof as standard (maybe a few other bits)

Prior to that they still have adaptive lights, bose, heated wheel etc etc.

We got a petrol which are rock solid and economical, the 2.2d has more oomph but also plenty more problems.

Nice ones are hard to come by used, typical SUV usage sees them used in a very 'white goods' manner.

Having a pre-facelift of the current Mazda 6 which is all but identical to the CX5, I can say it's a lovely place to be. Very rare I have any issues, it's comfortable, quiet, spacious and well equipped. I did go for the Sport GT-Nav option that's got everything apart from a speed limiter and radar cruise control and have switched most of it off. The only real annoyance I have is the number of lights on the dash. Everything has a light for stuff just doesn't need one. Rear view monitor, lane keep assist, adaptive front lights, all bloody sorts. Even cruise control being on but not being used results in an amber light. I think my record was something like 21 lights on the dash without any of them indicating an actual fault. Madness. Otherwise, lovely car and I don't want to get rid of it even though I just don't need it!

And after that they give the option to buy an extended warranty for 10-15 year old cars. About £500 a year on an SUV. Road tax cheap on a hybrid too.

As a 10+ year resident of SUV hell, I'd say you're doing yourself a massive disservice by not having the Peugeot 3008 on the list. Head and shoulders above the others in almost every aspect.

To qualify: In that 10 years we've had a Sportage, CR-V, Pug 5008 (3008 big brother), Q5 and Mazda6 (estate version of the CX5).

The only 2 I'd buy again are the Sportage and the 5008. The Sportage was more of a really pleasant surprise rather than anything particularly special - just seemed to have a bit of character about it. The 5008 was an absolute peach of a car - replaced it with a Q5 and regretted it. The Q5 and Mazda were fine - well specced and nice places to be, but just boring. The CR-V has a special place in hell reserved for it (engine problems after 2.5 years that Honda wriggled out of sorting under warranty)

That's the same for any manufacturer, there's nothing special about Kia/Hyundai in this respect. The EU Block Exemption Rules (which have been retained as UK law post-Brexit), take care of this.

Thanks all.

I have test driven a CR-V as I thought that was the first best option, it wasn't for me it was a Petrol 2.2 and sluggish but inside felt dated and also looking out the rear felt too small. I also felt like I was getting periperhal vision in the cockpit with the layout.

Skodas I've thought about them, it's Tig prices for a Karoq and gets above 18 with Sat Nav and extra bits you get on the Koreans.

I've got a passat (this motor is for the missus/us lol) and I've not been overly impressed with build quality on it tbh.

I agree. You can get an Rx450h in 2012/2013 model, with warranty less than 25k. They are bullet proof and top build quality.

You can get them less than that. I got a 2013 , 1 owner FLSH , 28K miles for £19K in september

+1. We really liked ours although now replaced with a Kia Xceed which is even better although slightly smaller. That's another one I would consider if I was the OP.

This is where my money would go.
Having had total reliability Lexus before, I would have no hesitation in having another.

I went through all this about 5 years ago and ended up getting a vw tiguan at 3yr old. I got the 177bhp diesel. I had no problems at all, nothing except servicing costs.

Traded it in for a 2yr old t roc a month ago and am happy with what I got.

Because >18k means greater than 18k.

Sorry yes, below 18k.

I'm not sure buying a 18k 10 year old Lexus would do it for me on ICE and technology all round.

I will fill you in once I've gone and looked at these motors in the flesh more!
