Question re Fiat Barchetta 1998

I love my Fiat Barchetta and have started general refurbishment, removal of surface rust, etc. I want to consider taking the engine out myself using a simple garage hoist. Can I do this from above? I accept this would require a full dismantle of the drive shafts. Would I leave the gearbox attached while the removal proceeds? My version of the Workshop Manual is unclear as to whether this must be done from below, in which case I won't attempt it! Thanks for you advice, Geoff.

I'd be shocked if you couldn't get it out from above without box, with might be a bit tight but once it's loose it's usually straight-forward to get the box off.
