I've been reading up on making Alexa commands context specific to the location of the Dot. So saying "Alexa, lights on" in the lounge turns on the lounge lights and "Alexa, lights on" in the kitchen turns on the kitchen lights. Seems like a bit of a faff but workable.

The next step is to just say "Alexa, lights" and they switch on if off and vice versa, doable with IFTTT?

In the app you create a group and then add each device to that group, including the controlling Alexa. See image below:

Standard phrases likes lights on, lights off should only then switch to the Alexa that picks up the command. Note they do pick sound up from some distance so if you have one in say kitchen and lounge and you shout from the hall, either or both will execute the command.

If you want custom commands or to do other things then you can create a routine. I have one in the lounge which closes the curtains, turns the ceiling light off and the lamp and wall light on, and turns the TV and AV amp on. That is also done in the app.

No need for IFTTT for any of that

yeah, this is pretty much what I've been playing with. It's the next step of not having on / off routines I'm thinking you need some sort of logic processing.

(we have very, very similar seasonal devices)

Yeah sometimes I have to rely on the IoT apps above Alexa for things. I put electric curtains in a few rooms and wanted them to open and close based on X time before/after sunrise/sunset. Had to do that in the Tuya app
