Hi guys, looking at changing out of my 2005 330i to a 2008 530i.

A few questions, if I may?
- how responsive/ reliable is the auto box in these? Does the engine have enough torque to work well with an auto box (I.e. no excessive noisy kick downs at the slightest touch of the accelerator)
- how is the NVH in the saloons (non sunroof). My E91 has a pan roof and is a bit noisy over some of the rough roads on my commute (10 miles each way)
- Air con, my E91’s blower is pretty limp. Is the E60 better on this front?

I’m after a more sedate/ comfortable drive with a bit of power when required, so thought this would hit the spot.

Cheers.

Very good car if you can find one with all injectors replaced with the latest revision, globally on backorder...N52 engine from 2005 is simpler and more reliable than N53 from 2008, and sounds better. The revised ZF 6HP automatic gearbox from 2008 is slightly better than the first version from 2005 though, mainly regarding the torque converter lockup clutch - more robust design.

Clearly 5 series is a step up in refinement vs 3 - BMWs core competency is in maintaining the adequate gap between the models. That includes noise damping too. Clearly without a sunroof the car is much quieter.

Another question, N53 engine…. Sat on the motorway, cruise control on. Lambda is sitting at 1.0, fairly stable. I can’t detect any misfires, and at idle it sounds a bit tractor-ish but I wasn’t able to do a proper 7am cold start on the car…

I’ve read that stratified mode should give a lambda of 2 or more. Is this correct? My generic code reader (Ancel) said there were loads of DTC’s but when I went into each of the ecu’s, it said no codes were present….

I’m thinking the car has underlying issues that have been mapped out, or that my code reader isn’t up to the job. Although the lambda value looked plausible as I was driving along….

Anyone have any advice?

I have an 09' e61with 113k miles. The direct injection can sound a clattery at idle, if the nox sensor or cat has problems you will not get stratified burn. Mine shows nox cat aging so only gets 30-34mpg on a mid seventies motorway run, gets around 23mpg around town.

Gearbox is pretty good, most of the time it will give you what you need, however above 40-50mph it will feel like it lacks torque compared to a turbo if you don't get it to kick down. Putting it in sport will generally sort that as it will hold higher rpm and change to a lower gear with less throttle input. Mine has the sport auto option so it has paddles, which can be handy for overtakes, but you can still use the manual option on the gear selector. The engine revs very nicely so get it above 3000rpm and enjoy it.

Would the fault codes for Nox cat, sensor, injectors etc come up on a normal code reader? I’m a bit of a computer biff so don’t think I’m up to INPA..

I guess they should, it's just that I find INPA messages more precise as to what the issue is about, generic can be misleading...

My n53 never showed the injectors as faulty on any reader, it took a garage to test them to show what ones had failed, plus mine clearly had the lumpy hunting idle and would almost stall on a cold start. It was liveable as it cleared once the excess fuel was burnt off but a pig if you caught at a junction or in traffic shortly after starting. Nox will show in your reader as 'ageing sensor' but again dodgy injectors can cause all kinds of error messages including that one. If the car idles perfectly on a cold start then injectors are fine.

I have a 2005 E90 330i so no experience of a 5 Series, but even with the glass sunroof I find it really refined (almost too refined).

So far as the A/C goes mine had a recall for the blower fan resistor outstanding when I bought it, and I never found the fan "limp". Maybe your E91 hadn't had it done?
