Ford Focus 06 1.6 petrol manual. I was driving & went to change gear as normal but when I did it felt like a pull as if when you take your foot off the clutch very quickly so I tried the next gear & it did the same changed gear but a big pull with it. A bunch of lights lit up on the dash & steering went hard so basically it had cut out so I pulled over turned the car off waited a minute started it up again & it's been fine since. Just wondering what could this be as I don't want it happening again?

You need to get diagnostics carried out, the internet cannot diagnose it. From there you can narrow it down to whats wrong. It could be a battery problem, dashpod anything .....

Don't these have a weird issue with the clocks or something that puts them in limp mode and causes them to cut out?

yes, normally an immobiliser issue, the speedo cluster forms part of the circuit and is usually at fault, but would need codes scanning first.

Yes, these ones get a dry joint in the dash, but it causes limp mode, not cutting out and no warning lights - but I think the dash cuts out completely just for the short period the ECU does not talk to the dash.

By saying the steering went stiff means the engine cut out, so I would not think it was that problem - either go to a garage that can access stored codes, that MIGHT give you an idea as to what happened, but I would keep driving until I can pin point the things needed to cause the cut out.
