Just caught this on R4 this morning 9/5/22.

If followed on from the headline news that VW have sold out of all EVs in Europe and USA. Issues remain about silicon chips but for EVs nickel and palladium which is now banned from Russia. Also covid restrictions in Asia still ongoing and production sites not functioning in Ukraine.

The CEO of inchcape was being interviewed and previously the view was that by 2023 start supply would be back to normal that has materially changed and we are not looking at 2024 with a formal email over the weekend stating 2025.

Demand for EVs all over the world is hugely accelerating too but clearly now there will not be the ability to buy the vehicles potential EV owners would want.

Thoughts?

Glad I’ve got 2 on order! I only actually want one but it was so delayed I ordered another from another manufacturer. Might well try and flip the one that arrives second

Well quite apart from the supply constraints on the input side, manufacturers have also probably spotted that there's healthy money to be made just selling smaller numbers of the most profitable ranges.

So not sure there's a lot of incentive to go back to older ways of doing it - they'll be happy to get their supply chains sorted but I wouldn't hold your breath for things to improve for customers.

And that's with or without the forced rushed changeover to EVs and all that brings.

My thoughts are that the ban on ICE cars starting in 2030 seems as perfectly timed as all the other aspects of the governments net zero agenda.

Go long Tesla I guess. They’re supply chains seem to be holding up well.

The supply problems affect ICE vehicles just as badly though, so I'm not sure it'll have too much of an effect on the plan to stop ICE only sales in 2030.

VAG are the worst affected, as pretty much all their wiring looms are manufactured in Ukraine.

Yes the silicon chips issue certainly impacts IcE but ICE nickel and polladium are EV issues plus demand is easing on ICE and pushing in EVs.

That’s what was discussed.

I also don't think it a coincidence that where they are built (to a large degree) has one of the highest dependencies on Russian energy...

I guess if China invaded Taiwan, Tesla might have issues too.

As such we know this will be years in the resolution so build new production plants elsewhere &/or prices go up notably.

Palladium (I assume that's the element you meant) isn't used in EVs. It's a key part of emissions controls in ICE vehicles though.
