Ruf or Sportec or 993........or?

Afternoon,
Quandry time, in about 2 years time it will be time to change cars, well thats the plan, currently on a 93 reg 964.
Now here's the quandry, I know my car, so should I offer it to Ruf, or Sportec say, or chop it in for a 993....My heart says 993 my head says spend the cash on upgrading the 964.....
So if I upgrade my car, say to a Ruf engine, can the local independant still service her???
I know its a long way off, but I do like to have these things prepared well in advance so I can make all the neccesary plans work, or just forget it completely if anythings unworkable.
Oh as for a 996, forget it, I'm just not interested at all.

Can i throw a spanner in the works?
The only downside to a 964 i reckon is the engine. So if you threw a nice 993 engine and gearbox in to a 964 shell, you'd have the best of both.
From what i understand it's quite an easy conversion, and 993 engines aren't hard to find.
Also, you could bung a supercharger on at the same time if you're feeling flush, or maybe a PSS-9 suspension kit?

Just that a 3.2 engine is simple and can leak a little oil, whilst a 993 engine seems fairly well sorted and again may leak a little oil (cam covers) but nothing too excessive.
Between the dual mass flywheel and the infamous oil leaks, the dual dizzy ozone problem, the complications of the 12 plug heads whilst still needing to do manual tappet adjustments and the 964 gets a lot of stick, but personally i think the rest of the car is a fantastic package.
A 993-engined 964 has all the looks of the classic 911: upright headlights, trim hips (unlike the more curvaceous 993), power seteering, better controls, the same classic clocks, the better integrated "crash" bumpers, with the ease of maintenance of the 993's hydraulic tappets and more "leak free" nature. Add the 993's 6 speed box and you've got a winning combination in my book.
Ask anyone who has thrown a load of money at a 964, then thrown nothing like as much at a 993 or 3.2 - where did they spend all the money? I'll bet it was engine related.

I've had a 3.2 and spent nothing on the engine other than servicing.
I've got a 964RS and have had it for 8 years - I have spent some money on the engine.
My friends who have had 993RS's have spent very major money getting them to run right, and then adding more power - loads more than you would need to spend on the equivalent 964. 993RS engines seem tricky to get right.
Maybe the RS's are different - but I always understood that the 964 was the better (not necessarily more powerful, obviously) engine. I'm no expert.

Had my 964 5yrs and its got near 10000 track miles on it and bar routine servicing and having a MAF fitted I've spent no money on the engine.
I've considered upgrading/rebuilding it with Motec time and time again but its really difficult to justify it when it doesn't leak any oil and makes loads of power.
The 964 has the better engine but its not as well excecuted as that in the 993 and the rest of the car is the same way really.

The only reason for going from a 964 to a 993 IMHO is because it looks different , and OK the multilink rear suspension 6 speed box and hydraulic tappets are a mechanical improvement , but performance is virtually the same .

If you're firmly nailed to the aircooled stick then I reckon it's purely a question of whether you like turbos or not.
Unless you want the very last 993 to have a newer car, then the only real difference you're going to face is the higher servicing cost of the 964 compared to a 993 (which may not be that significant with a good indie, I guess).
My 993 is a 1994 car so only one year younger than yours, and is still in decent nick.

Re. Engine running right. This is not my experience. apart from routine servicing my 993RS engine has not been touched in the 20K miles that I've done (he says touching large piece of wood!)
Kevin, if you're going to carry on upgrading (an officially recognised addiction after all!) why not carry on with the 964. IIRC you've done your suspension so now the engine. It's more expensive per BHP gain to play with a 993 engine. Plus you 'know' your 964.

Thats kind of what I was thinking, I know my car, and given that there are some interior requirements, carpets, rear seats re-covering and other minor bits, I didn't know whether to sink the money into this one, which by then will probably want for some engine work.... :-)))) or get something with a bit more poke.....
I don't curretnly track the car, but in the future that might not apply...I don't know,
Hence having spent 2k on paint, 450 on seats, £750 on suspension and other stuff, do I stop now, or continue on? I know I can't enhance the value of the car, only the ability to sell it....I've already been offered 16k trade in..so thats not going to get any higher....
Thanks for all the suggestions BTW. Having some experience on here certainly helps me make my mind up, which can be difficult thing.
