Having been forced to sign up to an umbrella company (inside IR35) after running my own PSC company for 15years, I'm now on my second umbrella company . The first one I had to issue county court proceeding against to get paid, left them and joined my current one who now seem to fallen into paying me when they want to. My contract with my employing agency is a month in arrears so additional delays are really annoying along with a lack of response to emails.
Can anybody recommend a "decent" umbrella company (if such a thing exists). Happy for a DM.

I use these guys

I was kind of forced into using them on my last contract, but due to them being pretty much hassle free the next contract I asked for the same Umbrella, they weren't setup with the agency so took a few days to sort from their side

I was previously with one called NASA, worked for them for over a year with no hassles at all

I’m with nasa now, seem pretty good, easy to get in touch with and helpful whenever I’ve needed to speak to them. Couple of colleagues been with them for years and quite happy too.

Thanks Chaps, much appreciated. Its a shame that having been pushed into this by IR35 (not counting the loss of income, employers NI and apprentice levy) I have to spend time trying to get my money (and paying them for the privilege!).

There is a lot of sharp practice going on out there.

I was forced into this for my first inside IR35 contract. They lost some pension money of mine, and now there is no trace of it. It’s not a lot, so painful as it was, I wrote it off.

The lad sat next to me, they completely cocked up his tax and said, “you aren’t getting paid anything this week, as your tax bill is so high”. He had to get his previous accountant involved to make them sort it out.

What annoyed us both was that we were both forced to use this umbrella by the agency, who had sole supply of personnel to the company involved. I’ve left now, but he told the agency “Look, this is how I’m getting treated, you can’t force me to use this umbrella, I’m using someone else” - They gave in.

I’m getting hit with this apprenticeship levy, I’m even getting charged £5/week for them to pay my pension money into my private pension fund, and not theirs.

The only way I’m winning on this is by hitting the pension hard (the full £40K) but that’s making it not very cost effective as a contractor. However, because of this HMRC now receive a third less tax off me, than they did 2 years ago, so all’s good!

It’s a sector that’s in dire need of regulation.
