I've got a 2021 14" Macbook Pro with a 1TB drive. It's been telling me it's getting full and I currently have 2.3GB left on the 1TB flash storage drive.

Now I have it set up as a carbon copy of my iMac with a 500GB drive, Dropbox and Outlook being the main things I use.

Looking at the storage tab, it's telling me I have 741GB of "System Data" - I've done some Googling and I can't find anything to give me a definitive answer on what it might be or how to look for it. I've gone through Finder looking for large files and folders but there doesn't appear to be any.

My iMac shows pretty much the same storage usage as the MBP but with only 74GB of 'System Data' - it's driving me mad.

Anyone had this problem or suggest how to tackle it for someone who isn't all that au fait aside from using the thing!

Cheers

Command + Shift + . will show hidden folders in Finder.

Generally I think system data is a general catch-all for everything else not assigned to a particular app. This may contain caches and junk created by some other apps.

Are there things you run on the Pro that you don't on the iMac?

Can highly recommend a free app called Disk Inventory X, it will show your entire filesystem as a colour-coded tree map and quickly show you where the space hogs are:

Run this and let it index your entire drive, and you should get some idea where the space usage is coming from.

Nothing I run on the Macbook that I don't on the iMac, less in fact.

I've just tried Disk Inventory X and it won't let me open it "because the developer cannot be verified"

Told you I'm not very au fait!

Hold down the [control] key when you single-click on the app, then click open in the resulting menu to override the warning.

You've been very helpful, thank you.

600 odd GB of WhatsApp backup.

Weird as I have the same WhatsApp app on my iMac and don't have the same problem. Can't see any settings within the app that are any different.

There was more space used on my Macbook than I have on my phone so who knows.

Weird thing is that there's nowhere near that being used on my phone including music/photos etc so I'm not sure where the 600 came from.

That said, WhatsApp is used extensively as a business tool so PDFs etc flying around all over the place... that and the usual rubbish forwarded around.
