Having Trouble Taxing a New Car

So at the weekend I bought a used car from a private seller. The car used to be on a private plate, but was put back onto the original plates and re-registered onto the original registration with the DVLA just before purchasing.

I have since tried to tax the car using the reference number on the V5C/2 (new keeper slip). However, this slip has the private registration number on it, and not the original reg.No. So when I try to tax the car online I am unable to do so as the DVLA do not recognise the car, whether I use the private reg. or the original registration. The car is currently taxed by the previous owner so that the car doesn't get flagged by plod as untaxed, however this cant go on indefinitely

I have tried contacting the DVLA however they are useless. No one on the phones/webchat and I also have not yet received a reply to an email I have sent them.

Anyone have a clue how to resolve this issue? Would a trip to the Post Office to apply for a new logbook and putting down the original registration No. work?

If the private reg has been retained the V5 with it on is now redundant, you need the V5 bearing the standard reg to be able to tax it and change ownership to yourself.

Unfortunately the previous owner doesn't have the v5 with the original reg.
I've been on the phone to the DVLA and the only solution they have offered is for me to send off a form (v62) for a new logbook with the original registration. However they said this could take between 6-8 weeks which is an absolute joke as they have also said I cannot have the car on the road until I receive the new logbook.
So now I am unable to drive to work in the next town unless I risk getting caught without taxing the car, and I have nowhere to store the car off road which means I will probably get clamped in the next month.

The DVLA are a fking disgrace.

Go down to the Post Office with whatever V5/Green slip you have, explain you'd like a V62 to apply for a new logbook and that you'd like to tax it at the same time. I had the same issue on an Impreza once and they gave me a V62 to fill out, managed to tax it there and then with no V5 and they sent the V62 off. Don't bother asking the DVLA for any help or advice, they aren't willing to help IME.

Can the PO not write a letter to the DVLA detailing the original reg, his details, signature, the date he sold it, your details and that he's misplaced the V5? I did years ago on an E46 and it was absolutely fine. Got the usual slip telling me the car has changed keeper and never heard from them again. Took no longer than a normal V5 change would. As far as tax goes, if Gov.UK says it's taxed, it's taxed. Plod would have to stop you for some reason and go digging to see it's not you that's taxed it. The likelihood of being caught is unbelievably slim and I don't think the government would care who's taxing the car as long as they're getting paid for that month.

Sorry if I’m being thick but there must be a v5 on its way to previous owner as that’s what happens when a plate is retained.

Do you know if it was retained online?

This 100%, if he has retained the plate a new logbook will be on its way to him.
