So my much loved 2007 E63 650i has been sold.

I bought it as an approved used car from BMW with 20,000 miles. I had it for 8 years and put on 90,000 miles.

It has been effortlessly comfortable and completely reliable. When I sold it, because of diligent servicing (almost all main dealer, surprisingly cheap) it was still driving very nicely and not at all an old shed.

I've added up the total cost of ownership to include servicing, repairs and depreciation. I have excluded road tax, fuel and insurance.

Apart from normal servicing (oil, filters etc) it went through
1 set of discs
2 sets of pads
1 AC compressor
ARB bushes
brake reaction bushes
front lower control arms
a blower motor
auxiliary water pump
some bulbs

That's it. It's still ULEZ compliant.

No problems with valve stem seals etc probably due to the regular oil changes.

Any guesses as to the total cost as an average pcm for owning it?

Best daily car I have owned so far. Its replacement will have a hard time matching that.

Great to hear a positive report. Out of interest, how often were you doing oil changes?

I’ll guess monthly cost at £260 for servicing, repairs and depreciation.

Total monthly cost was £185 (everything only excluding road tax, fuel and insurance).

That seems pretty good to me for a really nice V8 GT.

I did oil changes every year (even during COVID when the mileage did not warrant it.) I think that is the key to keeping these cars healthy. All the horror stories about oil leaks are because people skimp on relatively cheap routine maintenance IMO.

I was sorry to see it go, it was still running really well. It had to go though because I'm picking up a 997.1 Carrera S manual tomorrow, can't wait!

Always interesting to hear about this engine as I have it in my Morgan.

Sounds like it was a cracking car and whoever has bought it has got a corker.

It's also pretty rare to hear something positive on a forum where most people normally take to because there is something wrong with their car.

Second that, nice to hear a positive experience about a car like that. To many people try to run these on a shoe string and pass them on pretty quick blaming the fuel consumption and un reliability, regular oil changes show what a difference it can make to an ownership experience. I'm sure it will be missed!

Thanks

I should have mentioned, if you are considering one of these (and you really should) there’s a YouTube channel called ‘Tim’s BMW repairs and information’ that is a goldmine of info for looking after these cars properly.

I agree, I've got a 630i and loads of that channel is still relevant.

I ran my 2005 650 from 2011 on 38k miles to 2019 on 201k miles. I had the oil stem seals done at 155k miles. I used a really good indi and it never let me down. Still drove beautifully. My monthly cost came in at less than £200.

My only mistake was selling it.
It was a superb car.
