Are the DVLA MOT & vehicle registration databases different?

Hi folks,

Not sure if this is the correct section for this, but not sure where else to put it. I bought a car where the owner had lost the v5.

Respected car owner, no issue with the integrity of the person involved, just that he was moving into a different phase of life and wanted rid of a project car he'd never got around to starting.

MOT checker on the DVLA website has the car having its last MOT in May 2011, and the details about the car are all correct (year, colour, model, even the mileage).

I send off a V62 form to the DVLA in late March. I received a reply yesterday saying they didn't have any record of the car under this registration number, and asked me to complete a V765 (application to register vehicle under original reg) or a V55/5 (apply for first vehicle).

I can go through these extra steps if needed, but extra hassle to do so, and I'm a little surprised that I need to given that the car comes up on the DVLA website in the MOT part.

Could this be a mistake by the handler to not have found the car even though the do have a (MOT) record of it, or are the databases for MOTs and registration different?

TL:DR - Can you record an MOT of a car with the DVLA without the DVLA having a registration record for that car/reg?

That wouldn’t surprise me. I have a car on a Jersey plate that used to be UK registered. I got a mot done on the old UK registration and it all went through, much to my surprise. So who knows? Not me!

Separate, DVSA for mot, DVLA for registration and license. If you have the V5 document reference number you can print off the current MOT or its history.

And the details can differ between the two - I've a KTM bike for example, which is obviously orange (duh) and always has been orange. V5 has it as orange. On the MOT database it's white. It's evidently a bit of an arse to get it changed.
