MB E Class - Petrol or Diesel

I am looking at 2016 to 2019 MB E class. Should I go for petrol or diesel? My mileage will be below 10,000 a year.

I have had diesels in the past, but before DPFs came in. Would I find a DPF too much faff, or not at all?

10k annual mileage doesn't necessarily warrant a diesel. Having said that, the DPF issues are more related to the types of journeys you're doing, it's just that people with higher mileage are more likely to do the 'right' travel.
If you're doing an 800 mile round trip once per month and next to nothing else then the DPF isn't going to be an issue, it'll cycle during your long drive. If you're doing 5miles each way a few times each day and never really stretching its legs then you're more likely to run in to problems.

Also worth noting your location, any diesel bans that might be coming in to your area and the general price of diesel nowadays. All in all I'd be going for the petrol 99% of the time nowadays.

For 10k miles, bearing in mind the cost of diesel versus petrol, DPF issues, ULEZ type zones etc, petrol is surely a no brainer? Modern petrols are fairly efficient too. Drive both and see perhaps. I can only see the squeeze on diesel getting worse over time. If it has to be diesel, then 2016 is where most manufacturers went to Euro6.

It's easy to say petrol is a no brainer but there are far less petrols available when it comes to finding cars like this, everyone goes for the 220d new.

My FIL has a 2019 E220d and its fantastic - 2019ish gets the full widescreen dash standard - I think that would be essential for me as it looks so good in person.

I have a C220d (2013) and have had no DPF issues - bought on 71k, now on 92k, loads of short journeys in the week barely gets up to temperature but I do try and use it for a longer drive on the weekend.


Regen is as expected and keeps it in check. If I didn't do the weekend drives I would be more worried.

Will some of the newer petrols have GPFs?

Also some (if not all) of the diesels, as well as having a DPF, may need AdBlue too?
