i had the same problem with my car (88 3.2 carrera),
the heater motor would would make like a squealing noise only on start up then eventually stop.
apparently it was the bearings in the heater motor that had dried up, you just have to rave the motor out and regrease or wd40 them.
never got round to doing mine, just never took it out in winter.

just taken the motor to an electrical specialist, the one that re-wound it a couple of months ago.
he said it looks like the bearing has collapsed,
will post again when i know more.
does anyone know ,is it this motor that just spins faster when the switch is in pos. 7,8,9 ?
or do these positions run another fan ?

Most interested to hear what you find. I was told when I bought my car recently that one of the blowers is not working and the heater needed oiling. As I do my own work I would like to know where these bits are? Haynes manual a waste of space on this topic.
cheers

I had exactly the same thing break in my 3.2, new heater motor sorted it. About £70 second hand.

Don't waste your money on a used engine blower motor, it is really a false economy. Years ago we tried rebuilding the motors and found that the bearings collapse in time with the brushes, the commutator & the windings failing, we had many problems and eventually gave it up as a bad job.

The footwell blowers are different though, very often it is just the oilite bushes that have siezed or dried, so a simple strip, lube and rebuild often yields successful results.

Unfortunate really as the footwell blowers are a lot cheaper than the engine bay unit; typical eh?

Speaking of footwell blowers (presumably)...

I notice that even when the heater fan is switched off there is still some airflow in the footwells of my 993 when stationary. Is this normal?

Presumably that's from the separate cool air supply and stops when you slide both of the two sliders on the top row of controls as far left as they go?

I've got a noisy footwell warm air blower which I'm building up to trying to lubricate/swap. Is there a good workshop manual anyone can recommend before I start pulling things apart? Noted the earlier comment that the Haynes one is not up to much.

Steve, yup, totally normal. You'll probably hear the engine one going for a while after you've tunred off the engine too? The 993 has a system so when the engine bay is too warm the blower keeps going to shift the hot air elsewhere. 9M please correct me if this isn't true?

Bringing this one up again... HELP!

I've got a '97 993 4S that even with the fan off and vents shut you can still occasionally hear a noise coming from the radio/heating controls area. A sort of high-pitch tone that changes in pitch. It's never given any problems, the a/c & heating work fine, it's just weird. Anyone got any ideas?

Goodlife -it's probably the little fan that sucks the air over the temp sensor -bearings probably on their way out. About £90 in parts.........
