It's a long time since I've sold anything on eBay, and naturally suspicious.

I've advertised an item.
Then yesterday an email from eBay saying they've made a couple of micro deposits into my nominated bank account, they'll appear in 3-5 days, confirm the amount to set up the nominated bank account.

Check today and 4 micro deposits have appeared, what's all this about?

EBay have moved away from PayPal to their own payments provider, so it is probably the new payments provider doing some checks.

Yes I get that, when you log on you only enter 2 payment amounts to verify, but 4 micro deposits sent.

I think they will request you verify either the lower or higher amount for each one.

Well how would I know, you didn't say you did? Is this you saying thanks for taking the time to reply to your post?

They did the same thing to me. Told me they were making two, then made four. No combination of those four satisfied their system so I basically can't be paid now for anything I sell on Ebay and for some reason can't nominate another account. It's almost as if they're a company of moronic shysters.

On the plus side I've been promising to quit Ebay for years and they've finally made it easy.

I think the thing they want to be fully sure of is the account is right for taking money off you, not giving you it.

It’s a real pain now vs PayPal. Why they have gone the route they have is beyond my understanding.

It’s set up more for businesses than individuals now.

I find Facebook local buy/sell groups better. NOT the national one, just locals.

The micropayment authentication was used by Paypal and a couple of charge-cards I've used in the past as well. It just seems that Ebay, in their evidently infinite ineptitude, can't set it up right. I've also had sellers ask me for feedback as their funds won't be released until I do. Sod selling with that as a restriction!

I think I may have it sorted now.

Painful, awkward and not the slightest bit intuitive.

In the recent beginning when eBay was paying directly to the seller, the guy buying the stuff had to leave feedback, before eBay would release the money to you.
I had to message my buyer, to ask him to leave feedback, so I could get paid from eBay.

Me too, wouldn't give a bank account detail to ebay, too many scams they let through or ignore. i still buy occasionally via PP but no longer sell.

I created a Starling account just for eBay.

But I’m slowly thinking to just stop bothering.

Somehow over 20 years it’s just gone from being a friendly valuable place to an expensive shark pit.

I just don’t get how the recipe that worked so well can’t be replicated.

eBay has been moving in this direction for the last few years. As mentioned on previous similar threads when the subject comes up, eBay has been spending the last few years changing their model to become a primarily retail / business focused selling portal - just like Amazon. That's where the money is, in buyers using eBay through retailers / businesses using the site as a shop window. It's been in process for the last couple of years but most changes started in late 2019, were sped up during 2020 as a result of Covid and then brought in fully in early 2021. This is why buyers can now pay by far more types of payment like Debit & Credit Cards, Apple / Google Pay, etc, rather than it all being directed through Paypal as a 3rd party (although that remains an option).

Basically if you're a private seller that sells the odd things you can still continue to use eBay, with managed payments & fees deducted at the point of sale before funds are transferred directly to your account, or you move to one of eBay's other domestic operation products (Gumtree / Shpock) which will still allow for non bank account linked payments like Paypal and Cash On Collection, etc - which is what eBay would prefer - hence why private selling fees on eBay are now higher in some categories than they were before.
