I've liked Volvo's for years now. After a 99 S40 2.0 and a 04 S60 2.0t, I've finally got the one I wanted, a 2002 P2 V70. Its got the 2.3 t5 engine, auto, and is resplendent in Venetian Red Pearl.

Its not perfect, but as far as £2500, 20 year old t5s go, it's as good as. Paint lacquer is holding up well, unlike the previous 2 Volvo's of this era that I've had, and mechanically, it's had no expense spared over the years and comes with the documentation to prove it including 15 Volvo stamps up to 2019.

Sat on 4 brand spanking new Michelin Cross Climates with 4 extremely tatty 17" 'Thor' alloys

Interior wise, it's a lovely combo in my opinion. Its the light tan dash, with matching carpet (and original Volvo carpet mats throughout) and the cream leather seats.

Its got pretty much all the extras I think. Sunroof, electric wing mirrors, CD multichanger, ashtrays from and rear, the bin/bottle holder, pockets at front of front seats, auto dimming rear mirror, cruise control, heated front seats, electric drivers seat and of course the essential cupholder at the front.

Apart from Aircon, which I'm hoping just needs a re-gas, all the electrics work.

The previous owners definitely had a dog in the boot, but it came valeted and wasn't too bad.

It seem to be running perfectly. The auto boxes of this generation of Volvo aren't loved, but the changes in this are smooth as silk. It'll get a service at my local specialist at some point but absolutely fine so far.

Engine sounds great, and pulls well, the noise when you give it some poke and it downshifts outs a huge smile on my face.

I'll be trying to diary the work I do on the car here, it's definitely a keeper. In the meantime, here are a few photos.

I'm not really a Volvo fan but that looks like a comfy car to rack up some miles in. thumbup

I think ive seen this on the 1-5k barge thread, so I'll spare you the spiel about PCV and other bits and bobs!

It looks to be a great example. I have a 2.4t in blue with the same interior and its been a good car. I have pretty much replaced all of the suspension and other bits to future proof it and I think it will go on for a long time yet.

They look best with the boot spoiler i think, so good to see yours has one. Mine is quick enough with 200hp so I'd imagine the T5 is a good bit quicker so must be great to drive!

I thought about getting the centre silencer removed to bring out a bit more of the 5 cylinder noise, but haven't got around to it yet.

If you want to know anything maintenance wise just shout, I have been right through mine and also serviced the gearbox several times.

You can get a Bluetooth adapter for the stereo off ebay or amazon for £35 or so, it plugs into the CD changer port on the back of the head unit.

So comfy. I was test driving 5 series BMWs and got back in my S60 and thought, "I just want another Volvo". Like sitting in a lazyboy.

I did pop a few pics on the Barge thread.

Not done the PCV check yet as it's going in for a service and new brakes and pads next week so I'll let them have a look, fingers crossed!

I'm coming from the 2.0t so the extra horses is definitely a positive!

Some more noise from the exhaust would be nice I think, I'll have to look into that once the other little niggles are sorted.

The car came with an Aukey Bluetooth thing all wired in and it worked fine in my test drive. When I collected the car, the owners Dad had given it a good clean inside and out including moving and damaging the wiring to the head unit... I've picked up a cheap cig lighter adapter for now but will look into getting the proper one rewired.

So, this thing had all alloys in an atrocious condition when I picked it up.

Could t stand looking at them so they've been powder coated back to original colour.

Here are some before and after pics, huge improvement! Paid £240 cash which I thought was a decent price.
Before...

After...

New centre caps and non locking wheel nut sets on order to finish them up.

Had an awful judder through the wheel when braking since I picked it up.

Into my local garage yesterday for front discs and pads, £140 fitted. Happy with the price and the brakes seem nice and smooth now, another box ticked.

Wheels have had a full refurb and new centre caps. This combined with the new discs, is making the calipers and old wheel nuts look tatty so these will get a refurb at some point this summer.

Took it out for a decent spin last weekend. 280 miles trip down to Sheffield for a meal and back again same night. Lovely on the motorway and seems to hit 32mpg if cruise set at 75mph. Overall though I'm averaging 27mpg combined which is exactly what I was expecting, fuel price increases mean you do notice the thirst when I only use vPower...

Still beyond delighted with it to be honest. Puts a smile on my face every time I get in it, easily pleased I guess nerd

Fuel economy sounds about right. I get 30mpg on a run in my 2.4t at motorway speeds. The speedo in these is wildly optimistic and over-reads by 8mph I find. For a big old bus I think the economy is fine! ULEZ free too so fairly future proof.

Good job on the discs & pads - mine needed doing and also did the rears which massively improved braking performance. These are old school cars and as such dont have much bite from the brakes and quite a lot pedal travel, but when you give the pedal plenty of pressure they are pretty powerful! I think mine has the 305mm brakes

Yup, my usage is low, pretty much occasional weekend use and trips up and down country a few times a year. Smiles Per Gallon remain high haha.

The T5 gets the 305mm brakes as standard, Brembos I think. It certainly stops sharper than my S60 with the 285s.

Rears were new thankfully, so happy to keep the costs down!

Long weekend gives me a chance to try out my new carpet cleaner on the interior of the car.

It's pretty plush inside, nice thick carpets throughout including the rear of the tailgate. Lovely cream colour and has had a good clean by me previously but previous owner had a dog and my nose tells me the carpet wasn't as clean as it looked.

First pass seemed to show promising results, as did the waste bin afterwards.

I'll see what it smells like next week but it looks good so I'm pretty happy.

Nice car OP. I myself have an S60 D5, facelift model. Easily the best daily driver i've ever had, and I even prefer it to a Kia Stinger I had previously, and I adored that thing! I just really enjoy the "weighty" feeling of these cars, they feel very substantial and secure.

Here's mine;

One thing I would say OP, is get that gearbox serviced asap, and remember that being an Auto, it will need doing a few times to get a full change as they hold so much fluid in the converter, clutch packs etc. The best practice is to remove as much as you can, add back in the same amount of fresh ATF, then drive it for 1000 miles in varying scenarios (cruising, full throttle etc.), then change again. Continue to do this until the fluid comes out relatively clean. Your car being a pre-facelift is the 5 speed AW55-50SN, which are plagued with issues. The 6 speeds in the facelift model was a TF-80SC, which were nearly bulletproof as long as the oil was changed regularly. A good way to check it's performance is flick it into sequential mode, and as you go from 1st to 5th, keep the car at constant speed/rpm for around 30 seconds to let the oil pressure settle inside the gearbox, then floor it. If its performing well, the torque converter lock up clutch should engage, and the car should pull. Watch the RPM gauge as you do this, because what you're looking for is essentially like a slipping clutch in a manual car, if the revs rise at all but the car doesn't accelerate as keenly as its should, that's sign of an immanent internal failure. Get the oil changed asap in hopes of prolonging any issues.

I think they're lovely too, had loads of different cars but once I got a Volvo, I've never strayed. Got an 04 S60 2.0t sat outside too!

Yours looks very nice, it's a cracking colour.

Mine is the 5 speed. I'm driving an auto for the first time here, other than newer hire cars occasionally and a load of massive trucks so I really don't know what they should feel like.

It seems smooth enough to me, change from 2-3 when it first gets going feels like it takes a while, but other than that it's not any different to what I had expected. The car has been well maintained by previous owners and came with a stack of paperwork but sadly no mention of any gearbox oil changes...

Theres a good independent Volvo guy up here so I suspect it's something he can have a go at once I've taken it for our summer trip away.

I've read all about the different methods on the P2, P1 and the older 850s, the one you describe is pretty much what I'm going to do I think. Fully expect this thread to be autobox heavy at some point ha!

I had a manual x reg v70 t5 nearly ten years ago now I loved it even if it was a bit of a land yacht. 3rd gear on a bypass or motorway never failed to make me laugh. I was averaging 17mpg in mine so you can tell how much I liked it.

Struggled to sell it for £1000 in 2014, if I could have it back for the same I would!

17mpg is never far away, especially in the auto.

I reckon you'd get a bit more for your old one now, I gave £2500 for this and despite the lack of manual, I was happy with the price.

As I continue to use this thread as a diary to remember what I do and when, prepare for some boring cleaning stuff...

This is the cover for the boot, with 20 years of grime all over it.

This is the cleaner.

Light spray of the APC to the bad areas near the tailgate end. Left for 30 secs then gave it a decent scrub with an upholstery cleaning brush I got from Halfords. Sprayed down lightly with water, then wiped over the whole cover with microfiber cloths till all moisture gone.

Here's the finished article, it's not perfect by any means but for a 20 year old bit of kit, I'm very pleased with the results.

Here's the right half done and the left half still filthy.

Whole thing clean

And sitting in position.

Slow 2-3 shift when cold is usual, it will hang in 2nd gear for a while / high revs so that it gets heat into the catalytic converter, apparently.

Gearbox drain & fill is easy. I would recommend adding some Lubegard (red bottle) too, it improved the shifts in mine.

I'd also recommend looking into replacing 3 of the 5 engine mounts if theyve not been replaced already, cheap and easy way to tighten up the drive / feel.

All good to know, thanks!
