Anson Elgort(Baby Driver fame) plays Jake Adelstein the first American reporter to work for Japan's biggest newspaper Meicho Shimbun as a crime reporter. Based on a true story.
Interesting and engaging
Have you seen the whole series? Was enjoying it until the finale (ep8) where it just ends abruptly, with none of the plots resolved, but also without a cliffhanger that suggests it continues in season 2 (and having read up a bit, there is no 2nd season confirmed).Interesting and engaging
I wish i'd known that before investing 8 hours in it...
My advice would be wait to see if a 2nd series comes along, and then binge both together...

Now that's a bummer to read. We've been watching an episode each week as it becomes available on HBO Max. 3 down so far, think ep.4 is in the next day or so. We've been enjoying it, but now you've raised questions in my mind as to whether to continue or not!I wish i'd known that before investing 8 hours in it...

+1.The production values, cast, and the scenes of life in Tokyo are all excellent, but they seem to have written a ten episode series and only made eight of them.

Saw this on the Tv last night and only saw at 20 mins so planned to binge it. I may not now seeing original posts.
Loved it - agree the conclusion came quickly but thought it was brilliant and would look forward to any follow up.Perhaps it was not set in the West that set it apart :
The architecture, the cleanliness, the street restaurants, the bright lights, smart clothing, respect and order in society and a great appearance for Ken Watanabe ( Last Samurai ) as the main cop. Good sprinkling of s5x and violence.
Do see it through.
Spoiler to summarise how I saw it end.
1 News reporter Jake gets his story
2 The dirty cop gets what he deserves
3 The corrupt councillor gets caught on DVD
4 We see what happens to the missing girl
5 The Yakuza continue as they always have done for several hundred years
6 KenW manages to avoid the potential gang war
7 The Yakuza enforcer having straightened out his apprentice should have taken his own advice
How old is Jake meant to be...mid 20s? I'm struggling to see how someone of that age who hasn't been brought up in a multi lingual household can speak, and what's more read & write Japanese, to that level? My mate has lived in Tokyo for about 10 years, has a 2.1 in Japanese, and is maybe close to that level, if not quite there.
