It's Mathewsons again this weekend if anyone is looking for something new.....
Just watched a video of one car where the folder of receipts was shown trying to say it had had a lot of expensive work carried out. Except the £4000 receipt was actually the receipt for the car and was £40,000 and the next one was also a receipt for the next purchase of the car.
Might pass this time around unless anyone is going themselves anyway.

Watched one of their videos showing a Tobacco Brown Rover 2000, and I must say it did look very good. I love the horizontal bar speedometer. Unfortunately not in a position right now to take on something like that.

In quiet moments I sometimes have a look at their site and click on a video or two. Apart from seemingly starting each one with "Right guys...", the thing that annoys most is the lack of knowledge and preparation. I don't mind a few well-informed comments, but if you know nothing then just film the key elements of the car with out the commentary, like other auction houses do. Don't keep saying "Yeah, it's alright".

They push some utter ste through that auction room.

There was a complete and total wreck of an Elan Plus 2 on there quite recently which was not much more than a very rough shell with everything missing and no engine - reserve was something like 4,500 to 6,000. I'd be surprised if it even made a grand (for body cuts)

Nothing they sell ever seems to reach the reserve or even get near it and old man Mathewsons 'patter' is beyond a joke - he would probably have decribed the Elan as a "nice car, worthwile restoration this one, hard to come by"

The current annoying thing with the videos is being filmed in 480p.

To be fair to Mathewsons , the ridiculous reserves probably come from a deluded car owner .

But Derek's jovial BS is a little wearing .

It's an auction room, not a dealers. With owners of the lots often setting unobtainable reserves.

Most auction houses wouldn't take on a car with a reserve they thought too high though. Why would they want a car that they didn't think would sell?

Pretty much what was behind my comment - placing unrealistic reserves and silly anticipated price ranges just makes them look desparate/unprofessional

I don't see it like that.....give me the market price for a classic car...it is almost impossible?

More cars for the catalogue, plus I expect the seller has to pay them something even if it doesn't (or won't) sell.

During 2020 and early 2021, some auction houses had free entry, I used Brightwells myself for that reason. smile But they all normally charge £150 ish or more, something never mentioned on the TV programme. When a punter then pays to have it delivered and then transported back to him, he must be out hundreds of £ for a deluded reserve. frown

CCA charge £125 + vat and then 5% with a minimum if it sells. You're out £570 already, and then you have to deliver it!

Silverstone, their sister company, charge £250 + VAT and then 7.5% + VAT if it sells! No wonder they tend to have the cars valued in the squillions, ok £20k ish plus..... rolleyes

I've no doubt he's a shrewd businessman, but Derek seems like a nice guy. He comes across as knowledgeable as well, in my opinion

From watching Bangers & Cash, their approach to business does seem to be accept the seller's reserve, have the auction where the lot doesn't make the reserve, put the best provisional bid to the seller who usually seems to accept it, rather than have the difficult conversation before the auction. They even have a "refer best offer" reserve where the highest bid is referred to the seller for them to say yes or no. I gather that livestock auctions may have a similar way of doing things, and noting where Mathewsons are located, may be that influences things. Watching ACA on YouTube, I get the impression that they tend to have more realistic reserves, presumably as a result of conversations prior to the sale, and I've never seen them sell something on a "refer best offer" basis.

In the recent series, I'm sure I've seen Derek ask more than one owner what they want to get for the car, hear an unreasonable answer, and suggest that he wouldn't take it if that was to be the reserve as it had no chance of getting there.

I'm sure some of that is for the TV. The reserve price would have been arranged beforehand on the strength of photos and maybe a phone conversation. I doubt he's drive to a client's house with a trailer only to drive away again empty!

I've noticed that a few have a lower reserve price at the actual auction (quickly put on screen at the time) than discussed for the camera.
