Petrol or Diesel Motorway Miles

I'm after some help, I was thinking of buying a older car with cash but decided to go finance route for something newer.

I do around 800-1000 miles a week, driving in and out of London also so must be ULEZ compliant But overall reliability and fuel economy are the most important thing.

I've seen several cars I like the look of but unsure whether to go for a diesel or petrol.

Boot space is quite important too as I need to be able to fit my bird box in the boot which is quite tall so a saloon would be off the cards.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Thank you mate that was my previous post. Was hoping I might get different suggestions for something quite a bit newer

The mileage would say diesel but it would need to be Euro 6, we are seeing a number of cars with Adblue issues which we just refer to main dealers. That would push me to petrol. Some of the newer ones will cover 45/50 mpg on a run so in theory should be cheaper to run.

I'd be looking at a Kia or Hyundai of some description or possibly a Prius.

I’ve been hiring cars recently for my Glasgow to Peterborough runs to the office, which has been a great opportunity to test out different offerings.

Typically I go for a medium size manual.

Top of the offering has been the Peugeot 2008 GT with a petrol engine. Decent performance and reliably gives about 42/43mpg on the motorway. It had CarPlay which made it easy to use and the lane assist is easy to disable. For me it was a nice comfortable drive and a step up in quality.

Middle of the pack was a Toyota CHR. This was hybrid and gave good mpg. Squeezed it up to 50mpg. It went well. Lane assist was a pain. Style and quality was reasonable but I found it less comfortable. Connectivity seems much less intuitive.

Bottom of the list was the Hyundai Kona petrol, auto. Lane assist was a pain to assist and the fuel consumption was mid to high 30’s. Performance was pretty poor. Nice looking, and reasonably screwed together, but that was about it.

If my hand was forced to buy one I’d go for the Peugeot as it’s seemed simpler mechanically not being hybrid and gave decent mpg.

Edited to say: Personally I’d avoid diesel. I may well buy a car for these journeys, but it would be petrol. While I prefer manual, I suppose an auto with a good rake of gears to get decent mpg might be the way forward.

So not being satisfied with the responses to the original thread, the OP decides to delete the original post on that thread, and start a new thread?
Leaving a whole bunch of responses, from people who have taken the time to reply to you, including in some cases search out cars for you, appearing nonsensical due to the lack of the original post...

I'm guessing if it had been presented as an option you would have deleted the whole thread if you could?

By all means start a new thread if you want to ask something different, but have the decency to leave our original post as courtesy to all of those who made effort to reply to you.
