BMW 1 series B38 F21 VANOS
Discussion
Hi,
Apologies if this the wrong section, first post here!
Just wondering if anyone could advise, I’ve currently got a BMW 1 series, ‘66 plate with only 45k on the clock and it showed a check engine light with a horrible idle sound. I got it recovered to BMW and long story short they have stated it is the VANOS that is at fault and needs replacing. The total cost they’ve quoted me for the VANOS and the diagnostics is around £2500, although stated that they have managed to apply for around £900 goodwill from BMW.
Obviously this still leaves quite a big repair bill, so I’m effectively wondering if anyone knows much about these engines (B38 1.5L 3-cylinder petrol), and how much of a job it really is to change the VANOS?
Many thanks in advance!

Thank you for the reply! Seems that it is a common issue that BMW haven’t fully accepted.
Don’t suppose there is any guides about how it is done / the process or if it really is as big of a job as BMW are making it out to be? I’ve tried speaking to several people, all of who have said that the goodwill they are offering cannot be changed at all.
Car is currently stuck at the dealers and not too sure whether to bite the bullet or get it done elsewhere / do it myself (if it isn’t as hard as they are making it out to be!)
Many thanks!
