Euro millions Winners
Discussion
Great for the couple who won big this week and brave to come out in public. Got me thinking though. Anyone else who has earned that some of money by their own efforts is resented, people demand they be taxed more etc.
Why is winning it some noble effort whereas someone who has worked their arse off and taken all the risk for it, chastised?

I disagree with most of your post. Why is winning it some noble effort whereas someone who has worked their arse off and taken all the risk for it, chastised?
1. I consider it foolhardy, rather than brave, to go public.
2. People who win money are far more resented than those who have earned it.
If you win money, particularly on the lottery (which loads of people play) then people feel entitled to a share of it. £2 of the millions you've won are 'theirs'
If you win big, you're expected to share it out, donate it, invest it.
Can you imagine if your brother worked his arse off in business all his life and sold his company for £100m, for example. Would you expect a couple of million from that sale, just because you're his brother?
I wouldn't.....and yet people feel that if people close to them win big on the lottery, they should get a piece of it.
Lottery winners (public ones anyway) get begging letters by the sackful, threats, dodgy schemes. It's not considered 'noble' at all. It's considered lucky.

Why on earth would you come out? You’d have to be so unbelievably stupid and naive to think it’s anything but an awful idea. I can’t think of a single reason why you’d do it.
I believe Camelot advise it because otherwise the press will investigate and hunt you down until they expose you.Doing it this way, you are in control and get the exposure out of the way in a quick and manageable way.

Really? Do the press care? Good luck trying to find me when I win big. Doing it this way, you are in control and get the exposure out of the way in a quick and manageable way.
You would have to be mad to go public. The begging letters would be crazy.
I'm guessing that the "advisers" forget to mention that they really want you to go public for good publicity for the lottery. They will tell you going public gets it all over and done with so there's no need to try and keep it hidden from family and friends. Once you gone public the press will write only nice stories about you and will stop trying to find you and out you.
Not a chance I would go public, the big win will soon be forgotten about by the public and the press will move on to the next target. Go public and every wrong move you make or have ever made in the past will surface if it sells a few more papers, or gets more clicks.

How long do you think you would be able to stay under the radar when you win £100m+? You might be able to lie for a while and say that you'd come into an inheritance or something to explain why you had chopped in your job and suddenly had a couple of Porsches on the drive, but you would also force friends and family to lie too, and they might not be so good at it. Buy your parents a nice new house and suddenly they have to make up a reason why they can afford it to their friends. Everyone in the area would know about it within no time, and thats not even taking into account the inevitable Mirror or Sun investigation into who the lucky winner is.
You might get away with it if you are single, have no friends, are willing to abandon family and then move abroad somewhere, but otherwise you will get found whether you go public or not.

(of course Camelot would advise it, basically free/cheap advertising for their business)

Just say you won the normal lotto £4m. Nobody’s going to be kidnapping your dog for £100m ransom if you have won a small jackpot. The only reason I can think that they wanted to go public was to rub someone's nose in it. It's his ?third marriage so....

Personally, I would tell no one that I won, I may claim to have made money on Bitcoin or something to explain any large purchases but telling anyone is completely off the cards.

For some mental reason, people think that if you win £100m, you have to tell anyone apart from your bank manager that you have won £100m.....I genuinely don't understand why.
If you don't want to lie, just say you won the lottery.
If someone asks how much, tell them to mind their own business
If you feel compelled to put a number on it, just say it's a couple of million.
Nobody in the press or anywhere else gives a flying F about a couple of million, so you won't be hounded.
In fact, until the certifiable couple who won the £184m decided to broadcast it to the world, the press weren't that bothered about who won £180m.
I took an interest in the lottery when it started, but after realising the odds of winning a major prize was 13 million to 1, and there is tax deducted from the stake, I have never bought a ticket.
If a really big winner decides to remain anonymous, how could the money be paid to them in a secret way?
Not every one of the thousands of bank employees, can keep a secret, so there is the first risk of being exposed.
Have the envy brigade sprung into action about this win yet ?
Perhaps there might be calls for a windfall tax on the couple, by those who tell us, they now have to choose between heating and eating.
Is heating necessary during the summer ?

People get murdered for trivial amounts. What sticks in my mind the 5yr old son of one of the early winners of the lottery in Australia was kidnapped and murdered.
There have been a few reports of lottery winners suffering 'home invasions' in the Uk but they seemed to be hushed up - we're aware of one near us, it was in online news reports (not mentioning they were winners) but quickly disappeared.
I think it'd be impossible to keep it secret unless you more or less went off grid - friends and family would blab.
