Seems all the cheaper end and ordinary new cars are going, (c1/107/aygo pushed upmarket/sandero essential gone/a class/mondeo/insignia)

So what is the ordinary guy about town gonna buy soon, or will people who used to buy lower cars be forced onto the 2nd hand market?

I was forced into second hand market until I was in my mid 30s. And only managed buying a new car by saving like hell and finally taking a bank loan.

Somehow I survived.

By and large, "normal" people don't buy new cars so they'll continue doing what they've always done, which is buying whatever it cheap on the second-hand market.

But now all the traditional ordinary stuff stuff isnt being sold new anymore whats the 2nd hand market going to look like. I mean 1st car used to be c1 and 107 etc, but no longer out there.

Mondeo Man now drives a Kuga, and Insignia man now drives a Grandad X.

Both far less good cars in my view, but that's fashion for you.

Unless we see the end of PCPs, I think it's more a case of "ordinary" people now buy (actually rent vis PCP) something which appears more premium instead of buying a Mondeo and keeping it 10 years.

In the future, with electric cars I can see there being much more of a divide happening. There will be the "ordinary people" EVs like the Corsa E which is fine for local use, but to have something capable of a decent road trip like a Tesla Model 3 you need to be pretty well off (or possibly rent one for the small number of occasions each year when you need it)

Toyota corolla, yaris. I own a 2002 yaris t-sport, a lot of fun, quick and good mpg for a low price and very reliable 2.
Bought it for 2.500 euro. Pretty low price, the normal yaris is even cheaper.
Old asian cars are pretty decent.

Totally agree, and sales statistics confirm this. Just been browsing a good local independent, prices seem high but if you have a reasonably tidy trade in, that too is worth a bit more, so the cost to change may be managable. A bit like the inflated house market.

Never bought a brand new car in my life. I know someone has to, so we can have used cars, but depreciation!

Brand new cars historically have great discounts available, making them attractive

My uncle who I consider to be fairly normal, went Kia. Can’t stop talking about the longer warranty period. With cost of living I wonder whether 5-10 year warranty will draw punters in.

I recently bought a Toyota Corolla for exactly that reason. Provided I don't get to 100k miles it's covered for most things for the next 10 years so long as I keep it serviced at a main dealer.

It's an unprecedented time right now. Used prices have never been higher and new cars are very hard to get hold of. This won't continue.

However, new car prices won't come down but manufacturers will begin to support them with cheap leasing and finance options. As more come onto the market you'll see used car prices drop too.

It'll be 18 months - 2 years before that happens but fundamentally this is strangest time, almost ever, in the global car market but it won't last.

My current brand new car ( on dare I say it a PCP) bought in October 2020, is now worth 6K more than I paid for it, and that's without any negotiating.

This depreciation malarkey is just pure dead brilliant but of course you can still feel free to purchase a 2nd hand car at more than it was new...

They are far better cars IME despite the fashion aspect. In fact the 2 are not even incompatible. I find SUVs very naff actually, but they work better for me functionnaly.

.
Its been rare to pay the OTR price with financial discounts and manufacturer contributions, they could just ramp these up to offset the increase in price. Very few will notice the difference, many don't even know the price of cars these days, they only focus on the monthlies with no intention, if ever owning outright. If they did most would have a shock how much cars have increased.

I have never understood lessing and how a £30k car can be had so cheap in comparsion to the depreciation alone.
