I almost ran a red light today...

Sammy Davis Jnr & his mates were doing 70 on a freeway and a cop bike pulls him over.
"Whadaya think you're playin at boy?! Dont ya know this is a 55 limit? Why dontcha watch whatchya doin?!"
One of the lads in the back sticks his head out the window and says
"That's swell, but he's only got one eye. Whadaya want him to do: watch the speedo or watch where he's goin!?"

after reading that joke, I had visions of two eyed drivers doing impressions of Columbo:
one eye on the road and the other on the speedo
Yep - watching the speedo
Pulled on to Vastern Road in Reading (scene of one of the greatest cash grabbing scenes in England) at the TGI roundabout, instantly searching the distance for a known Talivan site - and there he was.
I was in the S2000, so mindful of the potential speed I was watching the speedo intently. There's a pedestrian crossing after around 50 yards, and the left hand lights are hidden by a tree, so I missed them.
Mrs Puggit said "ooh, that's dangerous" (yes she was in the car
) and I thought she referred to the van... On I went until she yelled 'stop' (so being the down-trodden husband, of course I did)...
After a short sojourn at the lights, I accelerated away, 2 fingers duly signing to the man in the van...
And to think, I could have knocked over a pedestrian (who wasn't to be seen)... I almost added to the KSIs they use to collect cash!

Actually having a digital speedo is much better then an analog one - checking the speed is a lot quicker, as you only need to observe a number... there's no use of the grey matter for calculating the speed from the point on the arc...
The only difference it makes being in the S2000 is that its a lot faster then the Pug! I normally exit this roundabout at 30 in the Pug - any acceleration taking me above the limit, so in the S could be going a lot faster (in the dry!).

Err, not so, because your brain has to translate the number into a reference and apply that against the speed limit, whereas with the analog speedo you 'automatically' know what speed the angle of the needle means (after driving the same car for a few hours), as in lower angle than that means less than 30 etc.

Nope, the Boxster has both... I always use the digital one as it's much quicker to read.
It is generally accepted that analogue dials are far better at conveying more information in a shorter time, precisely because you don't generally need to know the exact measurements (which would, actually, be distracting).
In these days of electronic highwaymen, I guess there could be an argument for the effectiveness of a digital speedo, but I still think a dial is better... You glance down at your speedo & see the digits "30" displayed - that's ok then. No - hang on, was that "30" or "38"? Better have a closer look just in case...
Don't get that kind of problem with a dial, as 30-ish is wildly different to 40-ish.
Had this argument with my brother back in our school days. He insisted that digital watches were better because you know the exact time to the minute (second?) when you look at it. My feeling was the opposite, i.e. the exact time isn't actually that useful; what you want to know is how much longer until the end of the period, and a very quick glance at the minute hand gives you a graphic representation of this with no need to do the maths in your head.

as another post said I too, in my Porker 996tt which has both a dial and digital.
I was sceptical at first but the digital is very easy to read, and is infact easier and quicker to read then the dial. It does also give a good impression of acceleration/deceleration simlilar to a dial.
The difference on the dial from 30 to 35 is tiny and would take longer to get your reading.
The digital in the porsche is totally different to the old digital wathches and would suggest that you have a look at a porsche digital. Havnt driven any other car with digital so can compare.

Those that claim digital speedos are difficult to read or take longer to read than a needle & dial have not driven with one - simple as that - they are just going on the nonsense spouted by those who automatically assume anything that is different is automatically worse.
If you're sceptical, actually try one for yourself...

Besides, the difference between 30 and 40 on my Boxster is only about 3 degrees. You can't accurately guage speed on it. Digital for me every time, I'm a convert.
