I've always wanted a 911, I've always wanted a 964 Targa. I came a whisker away in 2002 for my 30th birthday and nearly bought one for 14k. Someone rightly pointed out at the time that whilst I could afford to buy it, I'd struggle to afford to run it. That sent me off down a very enjoyable Alfa Romeo path, I bought an Alfa Spider instead and then a GT Junior. which I still have. But still the 964 itch was there. So with my 50th upcoming I decided to try and make it happen. As is always the case, when you want one there's never any available and prices are always high! Anyway, sometimes luck does come your way and I had seen a white 964 targa locally for many years and recently it had been parked up on a driveway not moving. I spoke to the owner and he said he hadn't been able to drive it recently due to ill health. He'd owned it for 20 years and had bought locally. It had recently had a full engine rebuild at a renowned local specialist, 65,000 miles, 2 owners, full service history. On paper it ticked every box but as it has been sat outside the body is a little sorry for itself. Up on a ramp and all looked good structurally so I took the plunge and a deal was done. White would not have been my first choice in colour but again with so many other things being right it was too good to pass up.
What a fantastic car. Beautifully built and weighted, everything feels just right. It has not disappointed one bit. I had plans initially to replace the D-90's wheels with Cups and lower it a little but the stock original look is really growing on me and I'm going to keep it this way for the foreseeable. I'll drive it daily for the summer and see what niggles come out.
One very happy (nearly) 50 year old!
I'll post some more pics on my Insta @woody.gt

Looks wonderful, congratulations.

Don’t change the wheels. Everyone does that - cups are so boring now. It looks perfect the way it is.

Let’s hope we continue to have good weather!

Woody - You’ve added another photo!

Looks brilliant. To me, and I know the purists will disagree, the Targa in 911/964 guise is my favourite. Bit of open top fun but the targa shape gives a solid roof and a nice shape with the black or silver hoop.

Agree, perfect as is.

Great looking car. I swapped out the flag mirrors on my '90 targa a few years ago. It's time for them to make a reappearance.

I'm not a great 911 fan generally but the Targas always look very special

Lovely and a great fleet you have. Just wondering what your plans are when the extended ulez comes in? Will you be able to drive the classics without being ripped off by Sadiq?

Thank you. Its a hot topic in our house. I had hoped that Sadiq may not do it next summer but whether he does or not will only be delaying it by a year or 2, its inevitable at some point in near future. Therefore our 2011 Alpina D3 touring must go, such a shame as its a daily driver and my wife loves it. That will probably be sold this summer. I think we'll get another but a B3. The '92 Saab 900 has to go, partly because I've got too many cars but ULEZ really is the final nail in its coffin. Again I love that car and will be very sad to see it go.
I work in Surrey and have a few garages there so the Porsche can be kept there and I'll just have to swallow the charges and bring it home less.
Alfa Spider is beyond my economical repair as all the floor and sills have rotted so that going this summer
The Landrover becomes exempt in 2024 so that will be stored in Surrey for a year.
Everything else is historic so exempt! wobble
