Niche query I know smile

I’m after a serrated utility knife - budget one that actually works! smile

For example, the first 3 from this selection all look fine for their prices . . .

https://www.johnlewis.com/search?search-term=Serra...

Will be used for fruit, veg, & occasional sandwich slicing. Probably other stuff but who knows.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

The PH answer is that the only serrated knife you should ever need is a Victorinox pastry knife.
What you need is sharp knife.
There it is.

In fairness, I do have a serrated tomato knife (that works a treat) and a long serrated bread knife for the sourdough loafs I buy, but otherwise yes - one sharp chefs knife does everything else

Indeed I do have a couple of sharp knives but having to keep on top of sharpening to avoid accidents - when you also have a serrated option to hand. I used to find that a serrated just does the job expected of it.

Anyhoo - I want one & shall not be swayed otherwise! biggrin

Being relistic, a pastry and tomato knife are the answer.

Yes a very sharp unserrated will do the job but it needs to be kept that way. Pastry and tomato require far less maintenance.

I have the latter at work, the former at home.

Tony, may I ask which two you use?

eta - think I’d prefer a pointy end but that’s just me

Yep. I spent some time with a professional chef a few month ago and a few purchases were made straight afterwards.

That does look like my chef's entire knife collection.

Yep, as illustrated above although because they are for work and going through a commercial dishwasher I just buy the cheapo plastic handled ones. At some point they end up being "borrowed" and never seen again.

I brought this recently as I wanted a cheap knife I could leave at work and use for lunch. It’s outstanding in my opinion for the money.

F Dick are my workhorse knife for home and work, I prefer them over Wusthof etc but knives are a personal choice and for home cosmetics can be as important as functionality (ie. rack of globals to keep Mrs21 happy at home) F Dick and Chroma in the drawer for me.

I bought a Victorinox serrated knife, from Switzerland itself. Wonderful thing until I snapped the blade off being a dick when carving a pumpkin cry

Replaced it with a Pro Cook jobby which has been very handy. They don't seem to do it any more but this seems a reasonable alternative https://www.procook.co.uk/product/professional-x50...

I've got a set of Opinel steak knives and they are brilliant. Only downside - not dishwasher safe if that's a big deal.
