Mileage allowance relief query
Discussion
Hi All,
I've got a query around mileage allowance relief and whether you can claim it to cover home to hub's. Summary below:
Contractual normal place of work is home address in Leeds (will work here 95% of time)
Hub (nearest office) is Birmingham however will never actually work here (maybe once a year if lucky)
Office I will go to is London (maybe once a month)
I am responsible for home - hub cost/mileage and the company will then pay the remaining i.e. Birmingham to London (but at 16p per mile due to car allowance). I *think* I can claim mileage allowance relief on the Birmingham to London (to cover between the 16p and 45p); but can I also claim it on the mileage from home (contractual normal place of work) and Birmingham given my employer isnt covering anything for that?
Hopefully that makes sense...apologies if not!
Andy

I would claim all of it. Don't get bogged down with the contractual place of work stuff.
Key points to determine are: 'Permanent place of work', ‘temporary workplace’, ‘limited duration’ and ‘temporary purpose’.
Your contractual place of work means diddly to HMRC, a contract can say anything, they are interested in actual realities. If you work from home most of the time then as far as HMRC are concerned that is your permanent place of work. Any business travel to anywhere else is simply travelling to a temporary place of work which is not considered a commute.
A temporary place of work can be regarded as a permanent place of work if you go there regularly. So how often do you envisage travelling to London? This is where it gets complicated because how much is regularly?
However before taking my advise or that of anyone else I'd recommend reading through this. It's pretty easy going and will answer all your questions: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ordinary-commuting-and...
