Music suggestions?

I'm knocking a video up for a mate of mine. I want to convey the impression of soviet hardship eg black and white and nothing to eat but cabbages. There is always the same couple of background tracks when you watch this sort of thing. They are in the classical music genre, But I'm stuffed if I have any idea of the names of the music.

Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe something from the soundtrack to Enemy At The Gates? Looks like it was all composed for the film though so you'd have to get the CD

I'd see what Russian folk stuff there is floating around. I'll consult the expert and see if she has any ideas. Classical is a bit twee, I would have thought.

It only needs to be a short clip. There's always the same few clips that seem to get used, but like I said, I've no idea what they're called.

I have often thought about visual images whilst listening to music and a good choice would be some of Tomasz Stanko's stuff.
he's a Polish jazz trumpeter but remains loyal to eastern European folk melodies and his music always has a sober edge to it. No showiness at all.
Try some selections from his albums 'Litania', 'From The Green Hill' and 'Leosia'. I'd avoid his last two discs as they appear slightly more ebulient.
failing that some of Shostakovich's string quartets are quite austere; especially his No. 8 in Cminor.
