he was an elfish twat but I utterly respected him for resigning when he disagreed with his own party and refused to toe the line down to mere conviction. the fact he was right IMHO too only added to the level of respect I had which was only countered by....oh, hundreds of things, but I did respect him for that at least
on the bbc website a statement from a cop with no grasp of the art of speech said:
A statement said only that a "middle-aged male casualty was uplifted and conveyed by helicopter to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness for assessment".

bloody civil service speech! perhaps one could say i'm "anger-enabled" to describe this seemingly irrational hatred of mucking fuppets who cannot grasp that if you make up words it does not make you appear intelligent, it merely makes you look like an incompetent git.

A well writen speech I feel.
As a Tory, not much time for his policies and opinions but I had respect for him as a man who exercised his profession well and was a good speaker. It’s always sad to see a man of his stature go regardless of their political stance. And at such a comparatively young age too. Tragic. RIP.
I will admit I consistently disagreed with his political point of view, but unlike most of the Labour party he had the balls to stick to his beliefs, come what may. And it doesn't matter whether he was right or wrong about the Iraq war, just the fact that he was prepared to resign to continue to defend his opinion, rather than weasel along to maintain position.
He was not perfect but I'd like to see more of this sort of integrity and intellectual honesty in our current crop of MPs. The fact that many libertarians / right-wingers / tories / conservatives / PH reactionaries (you choose) praise this aspect of his character suggest he was one of the best in today's polluted cadre of politicians.
As to his death, does anyone know why? For someone keen on maintaining fitness, it seems surprising that a routine hill trek would put him down. Sorry if this talk is not the done thing this early, but FFS he wasn't that old. Any history of health problems? If not, that's awful bloody bad luck.
