Agreed. My 20yo diesel at last MoT barely registered on the scale, so surely cleaner than a cheating Volkswagen...

That's for soot, not for NOx. A 2002 car without a particulate filter will obviously make a lot more soot than a modern diesel with a particulate filter.

I just spoke to a colleague who has secured £1,700 from this (not sure why it is not the £2,100?). The pay out is, I presume, to cover for:

1. loss of value when the emissions cheat was identified; and/or
2. loss of performance when the "fix" was implemented.

The impact on air quality would probably need to be subject to government action and I don't think the government decided to take any?

hmm interesting. I have not heard anything from Slater & Gordon and have been registered since day 1, also still own the car which I bought nearly new in 2014.

Does a % of the payout go to the legal bods who brought the action.

I know when I was contacted about joining a class action re my Mercedes on a no win, no fee basis, the payout was less the 40% the solicitors took.

There was also written in the "small print" a bit about maybe having to contribute to any expenses claim made by Mercedes if the action was not successful, over and above the amount covered by insurance, which seemed to contradict the no win, no fee claim.

Indeed the solicitors get their whack irrespective of the result in court.

Personally I think the payouts should go to improving the planet/environment rather than the car owners, the fact there was a cheat device and fix will get forgotten and I haven't seen cars advertised for less because of it.

Most of the people affected haven't seen any recompense at all.

I’m not sure you understand, or perhaps it is me. You’re conflating NOx (and CO2) with particulate matter.

I got £1700 too. Skoda Roomster 1.6 TDI. Don't begrudge Slater and Gordon getting their share, it's not like I did any work.

For me, it was about making VW pay for their corporate law breaking.

Our car was an Audi A1 1.6tdi , 2012 bought used in 2016.

Our payout is £350 , anyone know why it’s different ?

Guessing it has very low emissions so maybe just didn’t make that much difference, or, can the previous owner make a claim on it too and it’s split ?

I never applied for compensation, it never felt worth it.

It feels like VW got away with a lot more in the UK now.

Except many of the major car makers, were found to have ALSO `cheated' on their emissions figures. It might be worth checking to see if your car, is also on the list of `cheaters'
When I got my first diesel, it was a company car, I had no choice, I could either choose a diesel model, or a diesel, or if I wanted something different, a diesel! because the government of the day, was encouraging all companies and motorists to use diesels, So that is what they, and we, did.

used car values have increased and VW fixed the cars, so owners have not suffered any loss, the money should have gone to fix any additional environmental or health damage this may have caused.

Interestingly Mercedes have issued recalls for their cheating diesels and the software changes they have implemented have made many cars worse, with poor running and reduced economy, to the point where I and many others have refused to have the changes made.

They also said they would not accept any responsibility for any subsequent issues with any car with more than 100k miles as a result of the software updates.
