Discussing weed with your kids
Discussion
Afternoon all,
I'd be interested to get people's thoughts on how they'd approach this topic?
My 16yr old has admitted that he's thinking of trying it after his exams are out of the way, which triggers a number of thoughts...
Firstly, given that he was willing to admit it, the last thing I'd do is come over all Victorian dad about it, as then he'd just never confide in me about anything ever again.
Secondly, I smoked an absolute truckload of the stuff at Uni, so it would be completely hypocritical if I take a hard line in any way, plus he knows I've smoked it, so even if I did want to take that approach, it wouldn't have much credibility!
On the other hand, I gave it up the best part of 30 years ago, so I really know nothing about the weed of today, but I get the impression that it's a hell of a lot stronger than the resin we used to smoke! Actual leaf was as rare as rocking horse poo in 90s Liverpool!
The only thing I'm absolutely 100% certain about is that I wouldn't want him rolling joints with resin and tobacco, as the only people I ever knew who claimed to be addicted to weed were those who didn't smoke cigarettes and hadn't realised they were hooked on nicotine!
If anyone could recommend any factual resources that aren't too preachy, I'd very much appreciate it!

If he’s going to do it and he will do it whether you want him to or not, he’d be better off with a vaporiser than smoking it. Something like a mighty from storz and bickel for example.
You could give it a go with him so you do it together. I’d rather do that with my kids than them doing it on a park somewhere or something.

Ouch! I'm rather hoping he doesn't get into it enough to justify a £250+ piece of kit!You could give it a go with him so you do it together. I’d rather do that with my kids than them doing it on a park somewhere or something.
I would caution him to wait until he's in his 20s because there's still some concern about it permanently affecting developing brains - and development stops at different times with different people.
Like you, I smoked it in abundance in my late teens and early 20s. I was in a succession of bands and it was the "creative thing" to do. Grew my own in my first year of university, and upon my return home during holidays, my home-friends barely recognised me.
I stopped in my early 20s. It was starting to have a compound effect on me - for two or three days after a "night on it" I found myself chilled to the point where I wasn't really on my A-game in lectures.
THC measurements are off the charts in the stuff you buy today, and that is how I've explained it to my 17yo who acknowledges that and, thankfully, seems to be completely disinterested in it. He's seen kids in his 6th form who smoke it and how they have changed.

The fact your kid wants to even have the discussion with you says a lot
You need to handle it sensibly as if you don't he will never be honest with you again
To be honest I know some of my friends kids (teens/early 20s etc) who do weed on occasion and when I pop round and see them, and their children are there, they always seem pleasant enough
I would say doing a bottle of Vodka is worse than a doobie

All this do it with him stuff is nonsense. Smoking illegal drugs with your children is not OK. Just be honest with him. It is OK to be honest with your kids. Tell him you would rather he didn't but at the end of the day, there is nothing you can do about it. Warn him of the dangers. It can ruin your mental health, lead to dependency or harder drugs. For God's sake don't go and buy him a blunt!
I dont see it as any difference, apart from legality to having a pint with him.
Pretty sure all three of mine have tried it, all three have partners, jobs and whatever.
Weed, like anything is a problem if you hammer it, when it becomes a lifestyle rather than a way to relax occasionally, I hate the "stoner" thing.
It really should be legal, taxed and regulated.

Literally LOL’d at this as I sit here next to other half who’s just done exactly that. My kids have been smoking since about his age. Eldest quit a year or so ago. Youngest (19) is sensible and chilled. I can’t even handle a cookie

To add, he’s probably already smoking and just trying to break it to you. Be glad he’s honest and feels he can.
Nah, he definitely hasn't smoked it yet.
Apart from anything else, he wouldn't have the nous to hide the smell!
More seriously, he just hasn't been out socially at all since all the lockdown rubbish started, so if anything, I'd be at least in part happy that he was actually getting back into a social life!

Tell him it's a lot stronger than in your day. Also it has a much higher thc content, which is the stuff that causes paranoia and psychosis. Also tell him the people he will meet are BAD people. It's not like the old days when people sold pot to finance their own habit, these days it's all about the money, and people are being stabbed and shot.
Also, a lot of dealers will try and get him onto stronger, more addictive and more profitable stuff
It's all fun and games til the misery begins. It's a slippery slope w no good outcomes. Also tell him how pleased and proud you are he had the sense to talk to you about it.

Does anyone have directions to the council thread ?
If you consider drugs a council problem you sre very much mistaken. The middle upper classes are just as if not worse for drugs especially stuff like cocaine. They just hide it better and can afford to pay their dealers.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
