Evening

A couple of people i've been working with have been claiming a tax rebate as PAYE staff through an app called Tommy's tax. I'm not to sure what type of tax rebate you can claim as a PAYE employee other then incorrect tax codes. The only thing i know of is a clothing allowance but i'm sure this was a few quid or so. Can anyone shed an light at all?. The estimator on the site has stated £1000 refund on a salary of £50k. Not to sure what this could be on?

Thanks

Its usually for the cost of uniform / clothing and upkeep i.e washing and replacing etc.
IIRC you have to be 100% PAYE and not SA.
A lot of people I know have recently claimed this refund. On average its been about 500 quid I think.

I'd be VERY careful what normally happens with these companies is they encourage you to claim for expenditure which isn't deductible as the bigger the refund the bigger the cut they receive, taxpayer gets the refund and they're delighted but if HMRC investigate the taxpayer will be liable for any incorrectly claimed expenditure along with possible interest and penalties. You'll have no chance of getting a refund from the claim processing company.

I've been getting quite a few emails about this to one of my email addresses that go directly to the junk/spam folder. I've never bothered to read any of them as it's obviously some sort of phishing/scam.

This.

And it's not hard to get the money back yourself, if you're due some, by either contacting HMRC directly or by filling in a self assessment tax return, which isn't half as tiresome as it sounds (very little to fill in for most PAYE people).

I wouldn't touch a company that claims to 'help' you with tax refunds/rebates.
