What’s the “range” of a police force?

Yesterday afternoon driving back towards London on the M3.
A tall vehicle was coming up fast in L3, blue lights flashing and headlights alternating. I assumed it was an ambulance to begin with, but no. It was a Met Police Ford Tourneo. A quick experiment once it had passed suggested it was doing at least a ton, clearing a very effective swathe through L3 traffic.
It’s always a bit hard to pinpoint where one is between junctions but a couple of minutes later Old Basing popped up on the satnav, which is over 30 miles outside the M25.
What is a Met Police van doing that far outside London, hurtling back towards London with blue lights on, on a Sunday afternoon? No other police vehicles around.
It almost felt like they’d got massively lost then when they realised just how far they’d strayed, they whacked on the blues to get back home asap. But I doubt that’s really it.

What about BTP and CNC - can they do 'regular' stuff as well?
I was behind a BTP liveried car which was in the middle lane of the M5 fluctuating its speed annoyingly but always speeding up to 70+ when anyone tried to idle past it. In the end I took a gamble that he wouldn't do anything if I just tore past him, and sure enough he didn't.

Any English police officer have the same powers anywhere in England and Wales. The met are no different.
Unless on a known operation that the area force is aware the accepted operating procedure as I remember it is that police will travel into neighbouring police areas.Now it’s often common for units such as road policing to be tri force and so they have this marked on vehicles and may travel to operations all over those areas.
As said the g26 or major Operations like events police can be drafted from all over.

I always thought CNC had no jurisdiction in "regular" situations, although I'm sure if they came across something serious they'd help.They are almost always armed though so careful what you try!

I believe they do regular stuff if they come across it, but then hand over to the local boys to avoid the paperwork.They are almost always armed though so careful what you try!
Potentially silly question but something today got me thinking.
A fully liveried military police car that was pretty indistinguishable from a normal police Skoda except for ‘Military Police’ written on the side where you’d normally only see ‘Police’ written was thundering along (driving standards way, way below what you’d expect and normally see from regular plod) but could they act as normal police if they come across an event like an accident, see some criminal behaviour or simply a speeding motorist?
Do they have any power over civilians and could you simply drive off if they did try and pull you over or can you carry on burgling if they come across you?

One of the benefits of living near AWE, plenty of police floating around here and the MOD police do have jurisdiction.
They often set up speed traps in the village.

CNC round here patrol miles away from the nuclear facility. They particularly like doing drink drivers. They post at least a couple a week on Facebook.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
