Evening,

Looking to upsize from a E91 335i to an F11 or an E Class wagon.

How does the back seats fare in terms of space. Currently wife has an Xc60 she wants to downsize which means me going bigger (not that I mind).

This is the current set up when we go out as a family of 4 and if there’s 5 of us, we swap an iso fix out for a booster seat and an adult will go in the back.

Ideally want a 6 cylinder but 4 cylinder may be an option for the £30 road tax and overall running costs.

Ideally want to stick with BMW as bit of a fanboy with them.

66 plate F11 - had for a couple of years.
I'm 186cm with long legs so the seat goes all the way back and my son (150cm, not 10 yet) has planty of legroom behind me.
Its got pano roof so I thnk headroom is reduced but no-one is complaining that there isnt enough

Come to think of it, my mum's W212 is bigger in the rear and boot, but I've always found the seat bases too flat and short in the rear

I’ve looked at dimensions and the BMW is slightly wider than the Merc, but the merc’s boot is over 100litres bigger; Merc being a whopping 695 litres of boot space with seats up and the BMW 570 litres with seats up.

I won’t always make use of boot spade, but it’s ideal space for when we go on a staycation as a family of 5.

We had an F11 for a couple years and the rear space was great but the boot isn't that big at all for the size of the car. An Octavia Estate has more space for example.
Loved the car though, just felt a step up in quality and refinement compared to 1/3/4 series I've owned.

We've had a family four take holidays in ours to France without issue. 700 miles each way.

Had two couples go from Cheshire to Newcastle and back without issue.

I'm just short of 6 feet and I can sit behind my seat (just enough knee room).

Boot is adequate - a few cars are bigger Skoda, VW, E class but never found it too small. There is additional room under the floor and to the sides. The built in load cover and cargo net are superb.

Think a lot of that volume is made up in the way that it is measured. It's only the volume to the base of the windows which is quoted so does depend on the car styling to some degree.
That's said the Merc is definitely a bigger squarer boot with a larger tailgate

I have an F11 and its great when you are a family of 4. I'd say its probabaly worse than your existing for carrying 5. The seats are inset more so although its wide you end up with a tiny middle seat that is raised and has a transmission tunnel in the way.

One thing I really love on bmw touring’s is the split tailgate. Hardly use the actual boot opening on my E91.

The E-Class boot is like a small box room from looking at it.

Yeah the boxed back of the E class definitely give it more overall volume than the F11.

Yeah, I have a feeling it may be a narrower car inside. I know as the kids get bigger, the need for a car seat will go. Luckily the kids won’t mind the transmission tunnel due to this size.

I loved my E39 was a great car. Which is why I like these. Still like the E61, but think they’re going to be behind the times now, even the later ones with the more recent iDrive. Still aged well design wise though.

I've gone fro an E91 to an F11 and find it much roomier in the back. Have done a few France/Poland trips in the E91 with the OH and 18 month old. The OH found the E91 a little cramped, she was very pleased with the step up in extra space and commented how much bigger / more comfortable it feels.

She currently has an F31 and again the F11 is a considerable step up in interior space. I really like mine even in 20d manual spec.
