Buying a bike for short term

Hi all,
Im currently in the process of selling my weekend car with the intention of moving abroad. If the car sells soon then im not expecting to move until the end of summer at the earliest.

Id like to buy a bike to tide me over, but it would need to be something that could potentially be stored outside without being nicked and that i could resell with little hassle.

Looking upto £3k, im open to all styles but i love sports tourers.

What would you buy?

I was looking at Sprint ST 1050s, as ive already had a 955i and i loved it.

Do these move quickly?

A decent one sells easily, so user friendly and good for a country lane blast or a cheeky commute.

If your selling at the end of the season , you want something that appeals to those wanting a cheap Winter commuter hack, 3k is to much IMHO

If your hankering after a sports tourer , I would be spending 1.5-2k max on something like a VFR800

Sprint 1050 aren't good sellers - although anything will sell quickly if it's cheap enough / ebay auction

As said it's worth looking at winter hacks if trying to sell in Autumn - VFR750 / 800 was a good call IMO

£2k will get a decent one and it should sell in Autumn for £1500 quickly

FZS1000 Fazer, the carbed version, £1200-1600, great all rounder.

Very easy to sell on.

I'd go for a Blackbird. Really liked mine - kept it longer than any other bike (a whopping 2.5 years). Should be loads in your budget - might have big miles but that's normal for a Blackbird. I had no trouble selling mine back in 2015...

What will you be using the bike for op?

The SV650 is a good option and an all rounder, sub 2k will get you something decent, the 1000 would also be within your budget but might be a bit much if you’re just pootling around or commuting.

Alternatives I looked at with a similar budget to you were Honda hornets (600 or 900 would be within budget), VFR800’s and CBR600 F’s.

There was even the occasional R6 and street triple although those would probably be towards the top of your budget and might be a bit more of a scrote magnet than some of the other bikes listed.

Another vote for VFR800.

I bought a clean 2004 8th Gen with 30k miles for just under 2k (and then spent another £500 fixing the common stator/reg issue that the previous owner passed on to me!)

Id like at the least a top box or panniers, as for use it will be just for leisure.

What about a Kawasaki ER-6F? They always seem to hover around 3-4k here in Aus. Or maybe a V-Strom 1000 or 650 around 2009ish? I think on road based tyres either would be comfy, swift enough, practical, cheap to run etc.

Given the state of the bike market at the moment, i.e. very little available either new or secondhand, would it make much difference what the OP buys?

Depends what you are after.

I'm selling my bike 1200 cheaper than a similar dealer bike yet have only had 5 enquiries. 3 of those were dealers low balling me.

The stock is there, alot of buyers priorities will always be convenience of credit in one place and not knowing how to check something mechanically when buying.
