Who would have thought it, tyres wearing out produces small particulates.
Weight is one part of equation but miles driven is the other major factor, what is the point of taxing a heavy car that does a few miles v the lighter car that is doing tens of thousands of miles.
Putting a tax on tyres paid at purchase makes more sense, use more tyres which creates more particulates means buying more tyres and paying more tax for it.

This story should be phrased as "Look at how good modern cars are - the emissions from combustion are now so low that its the poxy tyres that are responsible for the most pollution"
But nope, it's all to the tone of how awful is this, cancer that, something has to be done etc.
Once the tyre problem is 'solved' it will be the next insignificant thing in line. "Car scratch repair deemed immoral; fresh paint off-gassing that occurs for circa 1 month following an accident repair found to be a major contributor to VOC emissions"

it's just more angst for the car haters. Once cars are electric these people should have no complain about them, in which case they shouldn't be taxed and all transport restrictions on car usage should be lifted.

No thank you. Higher seating position, offroad ability, towing trailers and just a nice place to be. They never go offroad
Proper cars can also tow and are nicer to drive.

Nothing new here, it's been reported now for a long time, the weight of the new generation of EVs is frightening and they are getting bigger.Time to regulate car weights rather than ULEZ zones?
I am not anti EV by the way common sense has to prevail moving forward.

I thought VOC from paint was reduced ages ago. It certainly has been in manufacture, and reputable respray places.But nope, it's all to the tone of how awful is this, cancer that, something has to be done etc.

I go offroad all the time.
Which "proper" car will tow 3.5 tons? I either get a suv or a transit.

k off. Nearly all cars are suv. Bland as hell and 90% look virtually the same. There's no individualism in them , everyone and his dog has one..
