Chopped in my M140i, need an estate.
Discussion
With a recently added 2 dogs to the family (one small, one medium) I suddenly realised my M140i wasn’t suitable anymore. I just want to pop them in the back and the first purchase will be a decent boot liner. My budget is 21.5k firm. The natural choice is something quick and roomy; 330d Tourer or something left of field like a Golf R estate? I like a quick car as much as the next guy but would be open to options. What would you do? I’m 52 and although I loved the M140i and I’ve owned a straight 6 tourer before and absolutely loved it am open to suggestions. I don’t want anything that has starship mileage and do around 8000 per year. Any input gladly welcomed.
I’ve just bought a 2017 330d xdrive touring for around your budget, and like you I’m also a child of 1960’s. This is my 5th touring, IMO the F31 is probably the best one since the E46. I never gelled with our E91, the styling was a bit dumpy and reliability was iffy, this one just feels better screwed together and more special.

Ah, that’s the one. You did well there. An LCI with those 704 alloys looks great. I loved my E91 too. What do you think of the xdrive and suspension on it?Sicksilinda said:

It drives really well, after being stranded in the snow with my previous tourings I thought the xdrive was a good idea. My only criticism is that the car sits a bit too high in xdrive guise.Naturally if you enjoyed a six cylinder, your next step should be a V8

To be fair that is the bottom of the market, so care needed to find a good one.

How about something different, granted it doesn't have a straight 5 but the dogs will love you for it, they will be able to have a party in the back compared to the F31

If it needs to have a 6 cylinder then how about an Audi
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202205065...
I don't like VW's but given you are considering a Golf how about one step bigger
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202201271...
Then again, isn't Volvo king of the Estates ?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202204224...
Then again, the Skoda is probably bigger
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202205175...
But if speed isn't everything these are nice

Yeah they do sit high, but the rewards are getting off the line in any weather and sure-footedness obviously? A 520d xdrive did me off the line in monsoon weather when I was in the 140 once and that was one moment when I thought how compromised they can be in certain situations.Gunk said:
I'm glad someone else posted the vag teknic link, as for the Renault, there is something very wrong with that interior.ZX10R NIN said:

I am nit picking, it’s a great car! I would thoroughly recommend one. LCI with M Sport Plus or Shadow line pack with heated seats and professional nav is IMO the one to go for.leef44 said:

I didn’t know an Optima with that kind of power was available in the UK. Nice. I’m really impressed with mine after a year but as it’s on the 1.7crdi I do miss the having a bit more kick and revs.Refreshing change from VAG/MB/BMW
The boot is huge but with the seats down there is a aperture rather than hatchback style space so a wagon would be ideal. Currently I’m getting good a Tetris

Current shape v90 is a brilliant steer. Genuinely, worth trying, 190bhp diesel goes along surprisingly well.Never to drive than our 130i coupe.
