Starting to look for a new (used) car for my wife.

She currently has a BMW X1 (which I hate with a passion, and she bought it in something of a rush and isn’t keen on it either).

She’s always had classics or sports cars prior to this, but due to a knee operation, and various other factors, she wants something more ‘jeep’ like (not a ‘typical’ SUV). She loves army type stuff, and would love a defender (remember, she’s used to driving classics, so something relatively ‘agricultural’ isn’t a problem). Looked at a great defender but due to its age the £560 tax put us off. We tried a jeep renegade, but she wasn’t keen on the interior space.

Any other ideas? I had a Freelander 2 a while ago, which I loved, but she didn't, so I guess that’s out. I thought about a Pajero, but they’re a bit old, although I’d love a Ralliart Evo…

Budget max 20k.

You might consider the Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota Landcruiser (120 series); I've owned both and enjoyed my time with them. Both are conventional body-on-frame vehicles so are fairly rudimentary, but are characterful, versatile and fun to drive.

Either that, or one of the modern pick-ups like the Ford Ranger or VW Amarok.

Land Cruiser 120 or (if the budget stretches) 150 would be my vote.

Good call. If the new shape ones hadn’t rocketed in value (and were still available) that would be a definite contender.
