Just a big mention to Ian at Middlewich MOT centre today (North Cheshire).
I have a faulty stepper motor socket thingy (the metal bit that bolts onto the plenum). TBH this is probably the cause of most of my recent problems! The bit that the stepper motor seals up against, at the end of the thread, is grooved and worn. This apparently allows air to get in past it, and results in poor idling and a bit of power loss.
He spent 7 hours today removing the plenum, cleaning the stepper, the chamber for the stepper, the plenum itself, smoothing the chamber to reduce the grooves. He also welded the exhaust.
Guess how much all this work cost me? £100? £200? £400?

You can't say fairer than that. Hes getting me a new stepper chamber thingy tomorrow, as its still a bit iffy. What service.
