High looking for input fellow Pistonheads!

I’ve just replaced a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports with Pilot Sports 4S as PSS’s were not available and told the 4S was effectively a replacement?

The car is a V12 Vantage and the issue I have is that I have what I can only describe as a droning noise at speeds in excess of 60mph and the noise increases with speed. I have had the wheels/tyres rechecked along with pressures and all was OK.

I purchased the tyres from Blackcircles and their response was that they are not the quietest of tyres;

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 295/30 R19 Y (100), Reinforced, Asymmetrical Fuel:C, Wet:A, Noise:B-73dB

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 255/35 R19 Y (96), Reinforced, Asymmetrical Fuel:C, Wet:A, Noise:B-71dB

Now the above noise rating is exactly the same as the PSS I replaced so don’t see their point!

Anyone got experience of PS4S on their Vantage?

Lots of us will have PS4S fitted, as they seem to be the go-to tyre for Vantages now.

They aren't quiet! I get plenty of road noise from them, but it's more of a constant roar, rather than a droning.

You're lucky that you have managed to get them - have given up trying to get one to fit my R8 ( rear ) as none in the Country and Michelin themselves cannot say when there might be !
Have ordered PZ4's which coincidentally I had on my V12 ( in P Zero form ) and were very good tyres in all weathers.

I’ve recently had new PS4S and Pirellis on my V12VS and no obvious difference in road noise. Droning could be a wheel bearing?

Does the noise change with the surfaces or remain constant no matter what the tarmac is like? I swapped some very old Bridgestone OE tyres for Continental ContactSport 6's on my V8V and subjectively on some surfaces the rear tyre noise increased, but the ride quality was vastly improved. My noise is like a constant hollow "ringing" (similar to that you get if you hit a tyre) if it's on a rough surface that excites the rears. Having said all of that I can still listen to voice radio in comfort at 70-80 mph on most surfaces.

Also, the noise rating on the tyres is the external by-pass noise, not the transmitted noise in the cabin. It should be an indication of noisier tyres, but not necessarily for cabin noise, as that will depend on the rear subframe isolation (the Vantage doesn't have any; DB9 and DB11 does), cabin isolation, frequency responses and excitation, etc.

I am obsessively fussy about tyre noise with my DD. Engine noise so quiet, that road noise became the dominant annoying sound.
I recently lucked in to a wonderfully quiet tyre, Michelin Primacy 4.
Exactly the same external rating 68db, as the previous Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres, but noticeably far quieter in the cabin.

A set of Michelin Pilot Sports 4S tyres replaced the OEM Bridgesones last year, on my V8 Vantage.
Obviously the engine and the exhaust are far louder than a DD, so for that reason, I have not noticed any excessive tyre noise.
They are so often recommended, that I did not pay any attention to Db ratings, but was not concerned for a low use sports car..
Tyre widths are of course wide, so that presumably must amplify sound.

The state of UK roads do not help, particularly the granite chipping surfaces (worst of all).
Newly laid, fine grain asphalt is the best.

My *cough* EV came shod with PS4S tyres which was a surprise. My AM also has PS4S fitted. No problematic road noise from the tyres on either vehicle, I would have definitely noticed on the EV.

I have had the wheel bearings checked and they will be double checked tomorrow by AM Indie!

Just been out for another run up and down the nice new surfaced M4 Jun 11-Jun 12 and back with a little detour to give it some beans on the Theale by pass and back and I am now suspecting a vibration from the front which on really smooth tarmac is just perceptible at 70mph, so will be off to the tyre fitters to have them checked especially as there is some evidence of weight tape on the inner rim which may have been left behind by the original or could be the new one has fallen off!

This is not over yet!

Thanks to all who have commented so far smile

I've just replaced the Pirelli P-Zeros on my Porsche with Michelin PS4S tyres and the difference is night and day. Even taking "new tyre" feel into account, they feel quieter and more compliant too. I wish I'd done it at the last change, but I was going on a road trip and they didn't have my sizes in stock but they did have the Pirellis. Anyway no regrets!

As far I know, PS4S > PSS. They are a more recent and better tyre, so you did good.

Let's see now the Pilot Sport 5 and 5S.

Anyway, I have them too on my N420 and I found them quieter than the original Bridgestones I had before.

Had P4S fitted to mine around 12 months ago, they replaced what looked and felt like original OEM fit Bridgestones which were way past their best so I felt it not a fair comparison.

I don't have any adverse noise increase, it does depend on the road surface which can be applied to all tyres I guess.

As others hav suggested it could be wheel bearing related.

PS4S's are hard to get here. I have waited 3 weeks and gave up and bought Michelin cup 2's instead as they were available. I don't drive much in the rain and the roads are warmer here so I expect they will do the job nicely. I had ps4s on my DB9 and they were excellent after old pirelli tyres. I recommend them and will report back on the cup 2's once fitted and wheel aligned.

Did you get the newer 240 tread wear? These are a much better day to day option than the older version and are designed to work better in rain too. I have them on my M2CS. They are noisy but give so much feel and have so much grip. They are fine in the rain unless you do silly things. Even standing water is ok. Be careful with gravel they really pick it up and fling it about. There is also an optional connect module which will give real tyre temps and provide suggestions but you need to get module installed during figment.

I am hoping we get the new Continental sport contact 7 here soon as I’ll probably go with them for the Aston.

I have an ev (Taycan ) but they are just ps 4 , not the s .
The ps4s on the vantage are great , no noticeable change in noise over the hard as nails p zeros they replaced

I just bought a set (going on tomorrow fingers crossed) and noticed when looking the “reinforced” option…maybe this has something to do with it if it’s a stiffer tyre?

I tried to get the Cont 7's but no luck . Not sure about the 240 tread I will have a better look. I know they are all within a 2 year built date.

Thanks for all the input here, just to close off. I’ve had the wheels rebalanced and car checked by local Indie and all seems fine with set up. There is still some tyre noise at higher speed and it may just be that these new tyres while noise rated the same as the set of PSS they replaced do seem a bit noisier!

Anyway I have raised the issue with Blackcircles and wait for their response.

As mention in my earlier post, tyres with exactly the same noise rating, can indeed produce very different amounts of cabin noise.

In the instance which I described, it happened to work to my advantage (daily driver).
For my Aston Martin, the engine and exhaust dampen out some PS4S tyre noise, so it does not create an annoying cabin sound, which would be unpleasant in a luxury saloon car.

No Noticeable noise difference with the ps cup 2's probably a little quieter. Haven't done any rapid driving yet as they are still wearing in. Feel great so far. The fronts are ps cup 2 acoustic ie they have a foam strip running around the interior which lessens tyre noise. Definitley noticed a difference when tapping the tyre on the floor compared to the non acoustic rears.
I will be going on a brisk run tomorrow so will see how they go and report back.

Great! You will be blown away on the brisk run. I can guarantee that! smile
Is that a mobile tyre service? I like that idea. I guess they will be in Sydney too.
