2009 MAZDA MX-5 NC 2.0 SPORT IMPULSE BUY
Discussion
I actually really am in need of a new daily, so this was a bit of an impulse buy to be honest, after doing some late night reading over the past few nights Accelebrate‘s thread and geraintthomas’s thread to be precise (thanks guys
) so curiosity got the better of me headed to autotrader and eBay but found nothing but dodgey examples with questionable mot history then thought I’d check Facebook and a lady 30 mins away had just listed one for sale 2 hours ago, looked good everything checked out stored in a garage and she has had it 8 years but just had a hip replacement hence the sale so arranged a viewing, really lovely women who was genuinely upset about having to sell it, cool fact she used to race in the Womens Mazda championship too, not in this car.
So this is what I was greeted with

It’s a 2.0 Sport, with some special edition sticker in drivers door however I don’t think it is any form of special edition to be honest (logbook just states sport)
2.0 Sport non A/C model
79k
FSH
Long story short after a test drive and a good look round luckily it was in a carpeted garage so I could lie on the floor have a good look underneath and she was happy for me to have a good poke on rear sills.
We agreed on 4.5k it was advertised at 5k and looking at glass prices retails at around 6 so maybe it was a bargain who knows car prices are all over the place.
The drive home was mainly 30 zones and a small duel carriage way and it was quite miserable but I had the roof down obviously because why not and I quite enjoyed to slow drive home and it was very tail happy on the damp roundabouts
, feels quite slow but I have recently sold the c63 so I’m sure I’ll get used to it
Stopped for a bite to eat

It’s got some big boots to fill i am Honda man at heart recently just sold my fd2 that is obviously the benchmark of fwd handling, just felt 20k was a lot on money to have in a old civic however it was a bucket list car ticked off, so this should fill the gap hopefully.

Hoping to take part in javelin sprint series with some freinds so initial plans are:
Front antiroll bar links (knock slightly).
Lanoguard the underside.
Due the yearly service in 3 months I’ll do diff oil too.
Jump on mx5 owners maybe get hold of a nice subtle exhaust system.
Rod all roof drains preventive maintenance.
Probably service all the brakes and upgrade disks and pads again just maintenance.
Possibly coilovers it’s very soft coming from the civic.
Wouldn’t mind some more wheels with nice rubber(got some TE37 in the shed but I think the offset will be too aggressive and won’t suit the Mazda)
Would like a roll bar that works with the soft top too.
All my freinds have taken the p*ss as I expected.

Looks smart, these are ageing well. I had an NC about 8 years ago, first thing I did was get it lowered which transformed it. Something about UK spec cars having a higher ride height than the jap models due to pedestrian regs.
Mine also didn’t have air con, which is fine in the summer when you’re moving but if you get stuck in traffic with the roof off and sun shining you’ll soon start gently roasting.
Keep an eye on the oil level… seem to recall failures could occur even when showing oil at minimum on dip stick.

They are lovely cars, and if you take the hairdryer from the boot and stick it under the bonnet, your friends will go "wow, a turbo" and will take the pee no more.
To make amends, I do track days in my TVR at Cadwell Park and have a great time with the MX5 crowd. MX5s are seriously good cars and a fun drive. Here's one keeping up with me....... linky to track day
Enjoy your new car.

The knocking over bumps will be your drop-links, I had the same. Looking at what you're coming from I'd go straight to a set of coilovers, don't bother with the eibach springs, as it makes the rear too bouncy.
RX-8 yellow dot roll bars are a good step up, GC fab do a roll bar that fits with the soft top.
There are a couple of options to bump these up to 180/200/220bhp without much outlay, folk have been sleeping on these, very capable with not much needing done to unlock the potential.
