Most reliable / cheap to run petrol estate - Toyota Auris?

I've been looking for a reliable and cheap to run family estate from the past ten years.
It must be petrol, automatic, high fuel efficiency, and be very reliable.
I'm at struggling to see beyond the Toyota auris hybrid in terms of ticking all these boxes. Any other contenders?
Only things I'm not sure on the auris are:
- space - it's not that big
- seats - they don't look particularly adjustable and I have bad back problems

If you have bad back problems then comfort should be your first priority as spending an extra £10-15 on fuel a week will pale in comparison to having back ache everyday.It must be petrol, automatic, high fuel efficiency, and be very reliable.

It sounds like you need to have at least a Mondeo/Avensis sized estate.
Also how much do you want to spend as that way you'll get some realistic options.
From what you describe an Auris won't work for you.

Cheap to run will depend on your usage pattern mostly. Our Passat GTE Advance estate is very cheap to run most of the time, as 90% of its usage is electric only, charged off peak.
Even the times it can’t be used electric only (such as Family trios to Devon from Cheshire), it returns 45-50 mpg loaded up with kids and luggage.
Of course, it’s only 4 years old, so wasn’t the cheapest to buy (18 months ago now, it’s actually gone up in value despite the usage), but running costs are low.
It’s also very comfortable with the ergoComfort seats.

About €20,000 in Holland, which in real market terms seems to work out at about 12-16,000 GBP depending on the type of car.It sounds like you need to have at least a Mondeo/Avensis sized estate.
