Been telling myself I'm not a grumpy old git but finally have to face the facts.
I was in the checkout queue recently and being a fool I had inadvertently left 12" of space between the front of my shopping and the preceding customers "next customer" divider. The tail end of my shopping was against the rear edge of the checkout so no room there.
So a woman customer rocks up and says "Can you move your shopping forward please?"
At which point I said "If you just wait a minute it will move forward on its own".
She then gave me a look and traipsed off to another till.

I should just have moved my stuff shouldn't I? but what is this obsession with getting stuff out of your basket onto the checkout so urgently?

Any other confirmed grumps or am I actually normal? Doubtful

You did nothing wrong, if she wants to be impatient she can do so. Since you grumped at her you'll never need to interact with her again!

Welcome to Grumpy College.

I would do the above deliberately, just to annoy someone.

Why such a big gap to the divider? That's what the divider is for.

One thing I hate is the next customer standing so close you can feel them breathing.

I had similar to the OP and left a gap to the person in front while they paid the cashier. The second time the person behind nudged me with their trolley I turned round and told them there wouldn’t be a third. Yeah, I know, proper hard, dominate the checkout and all that, but moving up would have made literally no difference to the person behind.

I was at Lidl recently when they did that weird thing where they close the checkout you are queuing at and open a different one.
I moved to the adjacent point and realised the lady who had been before me was now two spaces behind, the outrage of those in the queue was well worth the time it took to put her stuff in front of mine, priceless.

My wife has started buying me "Grumpy old Git" T-shirts.

At a check out the other day and, over the tanoy, they announced, "Opening checkout 3".
The woman behind me got there before me and proceeded to empty her trolley at the furthest end of the belt. furious

I enjoy putting the dividers parallel to the belt. I have never yet seen anyone behind me have the self control not to turn it back to the usual orientation. It#s just a harmless social experiment i like to do.

Honestly, why do people do this? I actually rather liked that particular nuance of the pandemic at least, I didn't have mouth breathing wallops stood 3 inches from my person.

No court in the land would convict the person that smacked you across the back of the head with it when they placed it correctly smile

I make a big production out of feigning injury, it's great to watch the reaction when people think they might be caught up in an injury claim.
Or another favourite is when they nudge me with a trolley or basket, to act like i've just been electrocuted and jump backwards thereby returning the favour.

Far worse is the person behind who places there own divider on the belt and starts unloading their trolley whilst you are still unloading yours. Then they don't leave you enough room to complete your unloading. shoot

The one that pisses me off is when the checkout operator starts the belt and scans stuff before I've finished unloading the basket. Now I just pick my shopping off the belt and go to a different checkout when they do that, worth it just for the look of shock on their face.

They tried having someone directing people to the checkouts at one Sainsburys I used to use, didn't last long as they obviously got fed up with grumpy s like me telling them they were perfectly capable of finding their own way to the checkout.

You'll be famous on Mumsnet for this, I would think inconsiderate rather than grumpy.

Verdict : Not Guilty.
Advice : Next time simply move the 'Next Customer' divider closer to the preceeding shopping, thus narrowing the gap and no one will know.

If one thread could define Pistonheads, this would be it.

bks to the merits of the Aventador, or IMS bearing failures in early Boxsters. As Kurt Jurgens said in "The Spy Who Loved Me" - "This is all the world".

In a similar vein of grumpyness I had a similar issue while going through security at Edinburgh airport a few weeks ago.
The place was rammed. It took me 1 hr 20 to get through check in, then began the ordeal of getting through security. Myself, daughter, wife began unloading all of our electricals/belts, jackets/bags etc. into the plastic trays and as such we had around 4 trays full of gear. people behind were nudging our trays along so they could get their trays on the belt - fair enough I suppose, speeds things up.....

Until we got through the scanner. Old bag in front of me decides that now that her 2 trays have made it through the scanner that she should start belting up / refilling her holdall with all of the equipment AT THE FRONT OF THE BELT with around 12 foot of "unused" belt being empty, causing all of the trays to now back up and stop the line.
I asked my wife who was closest to her to ask if she could push her trays further down the belt so we could "keep the flow" to which I was branded an impatient grumpy old sod! I tried to explain that by doing what she was doing was holding up everyone else to no avail. "I was just being impatient" FFS mad
